Hey Zeus - I have a review ready for this release but it is still listed as "not released" so there's no review button yet. Got my copy a few days ago here in the USA.

I've read that the sound is superior to the Borodin Quartet, but that the Manderlings do not play with anything close to the intensity of the Borodins. Any thoughts?

The Mandelrings play with plenty of intensity but they are not over the top manic like the Borodins can be occaissionally. I find the Mandelrings to be more humane and likable readings. I like the Borodin's as well but they seem to go for extremes and the Mandelings seem to make better music with the notes. I don't much like the Emerson set though I admire their precision as an ensemble. Sonically, the Mandelring set is superb (though volume 5 is a very slight step backwards IMO). Hope to be able to post the review soon. Check out the reviews of Volumes 1-4 already on this site for some other opinions.

Where did you get a copy so soon? I have Vols. 1-4 and really like them, and looking forward to this one.
Nevermind, I found where it's available!

I sampled No.10--they tip toe through it compared to the Borodins! I'd rather have super-charged two channel analog than such wimpy multi-channel digital. To each his own, I guess!

What is it that so desperately needs his attention?

One cannot post a review at present.

I would not call the Mandelring 'wimpy'; a performance can be light on sarcasm yet still be very good. But I do agree that other quartets make Shosty's quartets sizzle. I had the privilege of hearing the Shostakovich Quartet play Shostakovich and the experience was 'awesome' in all senses. The Brodsky set is my touchstone for sarcasm -- but they are on CD and redbook is thin on beauty, even through tube-amplification.

And, as long as we're indulging in wishful thinking: will the Rosalyra Quartet please give us more recordings like Shostakovich: String Quartets Nos. 2 & 8 - Rosalyra Quartet -- Shostakovich or whomever?
