Reference Recordings second SACD is a sonic spectacular and a musical delight.
Prof. Johnson simultaneously records both analogue and digital in all of his sessions. This SACD is from the analogue master tape made with his forced-gap highly modified recorder.
This is a very quiet analogue recording from 1996 and unlike analogue recordings from the 1950's and 1960's there are no artifacts, these modern day analogue recordings in my opinion are sonically very close to DSD and better than any PCM I've heard. I also own this on an analogue to 24/88.2kHz music file purchased from HD Tracks which I really loved until I heard this SACD which totally blows it away in every aspect. I believe it is because PCM is totally removed from the equation.
This sounds just like a "PROF. JOHNSON PURE ANALOGUE RECORDING" LP but without the surface noise. Reference Recordings LPs are the ones I pull out to prove LPs can indeed do deep bass.
Speaking of bass this is even deeper with more impact than even the best Telarc's, this takes me that much closer to the deep, deep bass I hear live in concert halls. The midrange is silky smooth with beautiful string tone and the delicacy and little details in the high frequencies are to die for. I know some of you think I am too interested in deep bass response, however I do not like the thin sound of basses and cellos on recordings that lack deep bass, not to mention bass drums and tympani.
OT I also got Reference Recordings 24 Bit 176.4kHz HRx of Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances HR-96 and I will reviewing both for PFO soon.

Gustavo I only have one track "Hopak" from "Exotic Dances from the Opera" at 24/176.4 which is one of two 176.4 tracks Reference Recordings is offering as a free download. I will compare that track as well as the 24/88.2kHz and SACD of the entire album. I first must find a good firewire DAC that will do 176.4kHz as the files are downsampled by my Mac Mini's core audio to it's highest resolution 24/96.
It's the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances in which I have the complete 176.4 HRx album. I've listened and it sounds fantastic even downsampled to 96kHz.

Perhaps if you spring for the DCS Scarlatti at $72,000 and ALL the associated Megabuck equipment to go with it, we wouldn't be having this conversation. And, BTW, an evening in Manhattan for out-of-towners for two (Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, etc.) would cost upward of $500-$1000 and there's NO guarantee that the program on this SACD would be duplicated LIVE. Are you for real?

I had the old redbook cd and while I'm sure it sounds much better, I always found the selection of music pretty boring. It aimed to bring back some once popular scores that are ignored today. After hearing them I can understand why.IMO, of course.
I was really looking forward to some RR recordings in SA but I have found the 2 selections we have been given to date disappointing.

What's the story with this disc. It arrived today but not a word on recording arrangement apart from the allusion to original analogue recordings.
DSD isn't mentioned anywhere in the booklet, cover or on disc?
