There is plenty of (somewhat) useful description of this disc's sound quality, but no one has addressed the performance itself. Nor has anyone compared it to other SACD performances, nor RB perfs in any detail.
How fast do Lang Lang & Co. play? Does he milk the juicy bits? Does he take the lean or meaty cadenza in the first movement?
You know -- the music. How goes the music-making?

I listened to this Rach 3 only once and gave it away. As a performance it's brash, wilful and devoid of all feeling. The old Earl Wild/Jascha Horenstein recording isn't perfect but at least the pianist places himself at the service of the music and not the other way round.

He plays the long cadenza. While the pianism per se is virtuosic enough from a technical standpoint the performance seems episodic, lacking a clear sense of the piece as a whole. Nothing here to challenge the Hough/Litton set on Hyperion if you can still find a copy on sacd (just turn up the volume to bring the sound into focus), not to mention Argerich on rbcd.

As a performance, it doesn't compare with Volodos' on Sony (for SACD). I didn't keep it long enough to compare the audio, but as I recall, the sound per se was fine. My favorite RB version is Lazar Berman's on CBS. It's not available in the US, but it's worth the hunt! I bought mine from JPC.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I ordered the Hough/Litton a few months ago (from hbdirect), but never got it. Then I read on this site that Hyperion abandoned SACD, so no more happy anticipation when fetching the mail! Too bad, because based on the reviews, I'd enjoy them. (Based on your descriptions, I would not like Lang Lang.)
And too bad Hyperion doesn't have the same policy as BIS when it comes to deletions. I once had a chance to grab the Hyperion (at a Borders of all places), but passed because they cost almost fifty bucks and I didn't own a SACD player then. I'd pay for them now!
