I bought this SACD:

Dianne Reeves: The Calling

I am trying to play it on my Playstation 3 which is connected via an optical cable to this tuner:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/224&cl=US,EN

When it plays, it shows on the tuner as "Dolby Pro Logic II Music" rather than "Dolby Digital", and the sound mix is totally wrong - the vocals are all but missing. It's like an entire channel is gone. The only way I can get it to sound right is to tell the PS3 to play the stereo mix instead of the multichannel mix.

I assumed that my other SACDs were playing correctly, but when I checked them out I found that they too are being decoded as Dolby Pro Logic II Music.

Is my speaker system somehow incapable of decoding SACDs correctly? If so, what might it be missing? DVDs play correctly in 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Thanks.

The optical cable only carries the stereo pcm output from your playstation 3. I suggest you use analog cables or HDMI connectors (if your receiver is compliant) to successfully carry the multichannel info from the SACD. The playstation w/optical cable is reading the cd layer and correctly decodes it in prologic II as no CD is dolby digital (only DVD and blu-ray).

If you want multichannel from a PS3, your choices are via HDMI (as PCM) or analog. You cannot use the optical output for full multichannel.

See http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html for a full explanation.

Thanks for your quick and helpful responses! No wonder the SACDs I've played have sounded disappointing! ;-)

You have not specified if your PS3 is actually one that actually has SACD replay (later models do not have this) check for the SACD logo. I know from your posting here on this site that it probably has but it never hurts to check

You could, but only with firmware v2.00 (available for just 14 days) -- none before and none after. That version did real-time DSD-to-DTS transcoding for 5.1-channel output via optical.
