As others have already pointed out, there really isn't much choice left when it comes to SACD here in Australia.

Actually, I think it is really changing for the better. I was amazed to see ... just about a month ago ... one of the local retailers (I think it was Len Wallis Audio) took out a full page advert in the Sydney Morning Herald Monday Guide to advertise their launch of the Marantz SA-8003. A full page advert for an SACD player.

How cool is that!

Thank you all for your recommendations.

As others have already pointed out, there really isn't much choice left when it comes to SACD here in Australia. Very little that is still available (Yamaha, Marantz) is sold at a very unreasonable price (to put it mildly). Don't think Pioneer is available either. Sony Australia doesn't import SCD-XA5400 and besides, it's almost impossible to find(220-240 V) version elsewhere.

At one stage, I was thinking about modding my existing player (XB790) but due to its design(build), cost-benefit ratio wouldn't be that great (unlike with XB940). Maybe at some stage (if I decide to keep it) I may add detachable power cord and (or) try to put a new clock (obvious things for improvement on this model).

Anyways, I have placed the order for SA8003 via Singapore ;). Just under $1000 AUD incl. shipping.

Cheers

actually, Sony NZ still has the XA5400ES in stock:

http://sony.co.nz/products/product/hi-fi/hi-fi-components/scdxa5400es.jsp

sadly, they increased the price from NZD$2999 to NZD$3999! :(

SA8003 is not a bad choice at all. if u have a bit more budget/patient, the Pioneer PD-D9 MKII might be a wild card for you - i think u can also get this unit in Singapore.

either way, enjoy the music!!! :)

cheers,
wps

My brother's Sony XB940 stereo player has developed what appears to be a serious logic problem, so he is now looking around for a new SACD player and was told this afternoon that the SCDXA5400ES multichannel player will be available again in New Zealand soon and retail for $3000.00.

He is definitely considering it.

Do not miss the Oppo BPD-83. I plays everything, BRILLIANTLY, musically, fuss-free. I have a huge collection of SACD, Blu-Ray, CD, DVD, and DVD-Audio. All of these discs look and sound the best they ever have.

Sorry to residents of Europe, as Oppo has declined the opportunity to sell this phenomenal machine in the EU...

I live in San Francisco, where they are located. I have not bought a better piece of equipment in many years. If you are looking to get a universal player, this one is very special...
