Has anyone heard this recording yet? I have this one on my wish list. I heard a few seconds of this opera on the radio once and have wanted to hear it ever since. This is probably gonna be the next SACD I buy. Now if I can only come up with the cash. I may get this on low-res iTunes in the meantime.

Just got it so all I can say is that the cover/packaging is nice. Hope to get to listening this weekend.

This opera's title reminds me of the old Woody Allen movie "Sleeper."

It's a great Opera with the kind of stunning, surreal orchestration one hears in the composer's 4th Symphony. What a pity that he wasn't allowed to continue on this route, not that I'm complaining.

I have the Classic old Melodiya on Lp's and it's pretty well-recorded for the company--airplane hanger sound but not quite so crass and brittle in the climaxes as one usually expects.

There aren't any "big" melodies, though and not much repetition; more stream of consciousness writing. I love it but some may be turned off.

Perhaps before you order the opera, read the short story:

I have already ordered this set; should I cancel my order, read the story, then reorder? hohoho! Don't worry, it's the heat affecting me...... many thanks for the link.

Actually, it's had a very good review in one of the UK Sunday broadsheets. I'm really looking forward to this one - in fact, had Melodiya provided a libretto with its issue I probably wouldn't have bothered with this new one. An opera reliant so much on the wit in the words really does need the libretto, I think.

There is no information if the Mariinsky discs of Shostakovich's The Nose and the forthcoming Symphonies 1 & 15 are recorded with a live audience or not. Mariinsky's website doesn't make it clear, while Castor's review of The Nose only refers to "a convincing re-creation of a theatrical experience." Actually, many companies leave any mention of the live recording provenance to the back of the jewel case, which is unhelpful when ordering online.

As far as I am aware these are 'studio' recordings. "The re-creation of a theatrical experience" refers to the movement of voices across the stage and the perspectives created in, for example, the Kazan Cathedral scene (disc 1 track 7).

All of the Mariinsky discs are recorded under "live" conditions, not unlike the LSO series. What that means is the three or so rehearsals and two concerts are recorded, and edited into one release. The objective is to get 95% or more out of the public concert(s), and use the rehearsals as patch sessions. All of these upcoming Mariinsky recordings were recorded in the new Mariinsky 3 Hall by Soundmirror of Boston in DSD.
