As has been claimed and noticed here, there is indeed a problem with the SACD layers on this release. It occured in the post-production phase of the album's production, and while we do take steps to ensure that errors like this are identified before an album goes on sale, we missed it this time. We've taken further action to make sure that this type of problem cannot happen again.

New hybrid SACDs have been ordered from the manufacturer. If anyone has purchased a defective SACD (and all available copies are defective), please send it to the address below, and a replacement copy will be mailed to you.

The classical-music industry has a long history of leadership in high-quality audio recording, and today SACD technology is a large part of this. The CSO and CSO Resound are committed to this format, and to those listeners who are devoted to it. We regret that this mistake has been made by our still-young label. There are more recordings on their way from CSO Resound, and we hope that you enjoy the performances captured on those SACDs.

Please send all correspondence on this issue to:

Marc Geelhoed
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
220 S. Michigan Ave.
Chicago, IL 60604

Thank you.

Good to hear that there will be more SACDs from the CSO!

If you release good music on SACD I am sure I will buy some if they become easily available internationally.

But a bit off topic here maybe, since you posted here, may I ask if there are any plans like the BFO to sell HI RES downloads from your live concerts too?

I already know that you have some titles for download via HD Tracks.

But since I live in Sweden I can not buy anything via HD Tracks.

The really good thing abot the BFO downloads is that thay are HI RES and also very cheap.

I paid 9.99 or Brahms ´Requiem in a 24/88.2 download that sounds fine indeed,
basically like an SACD.

I am sure MANY international music lovers would appreciate HI RES! not MP3 downloads directly from the CSO as well.

Interesting. The BSO website suggests there were four releases on the BSO Live label earlier this year but only two made it onto SACD disc in DSD form. The others are offered as downloads in high-res PCM. It seems odd for them to follow both courses, maybe they used two different recording companies to see which one to run with in future?

Whatever, there is no news so far of further releases and this worries me as I had hoped that they, the SFSO and CSO Resound offered the hope of at least helping to arrest the decline of SACD amongst the majors.

I purchased a one year subscription for $50 which includes all of BSO's 24 Bit 88.2kHz downloads including the six currently available and the upcoming eight new titles. Actually three of their high resolution recordings so far have been released on SACD, the two Boston Symphony Orchestra SACDs you mentioned plus Mozart: Chamber Music for Winds and Strings - Boston Symphony Chamber Players

I recently was loaned the SACD versions of both the Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem - Levine and Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé - Levine so I could do a comparison review for PFO of the SACDs versus the 24/88.2kHz downloads. As expected the DSD recorded SACDs do indeed sound better but the high resolution downloads are quite superb in their own right.

So far there are six 24 Bit 88.2kHz downloads available and there should be at least eight more in the coming year according to James Levine, that works out to 14 high resolution downloads for $50 or $3.57 each! Plus they also have a lot of historical concerts recorded between 1943 to 2000 at low resolution 320kbps that is free to download with paid subscriptions.

The three 24 Bit 88.2kHz downloads that are not on SACD yet:
The Red Sox™ Album (Keith Lockhart, Boston Pops)
Mahler: Symphony No. 6 (James Levine, Boston Symphony Orchestra)
Bolcom: Lyric Concerto; Symphony No. 8 for chorus and orchestra (James Levine, Boston Symphony Orchestra)

I like Levine's Mahler 6th better than Zander's on Telarc and the Bolcom works are tonal, very approachable and likable, both of these along with the Boston Pops recordings would make excellent SACDs. I don't know if it will happen. In the interview Mr. Levine didn't say if SACDs of these would be released, However everything will be available as high resolution dowmloads in both Stereo and Multichannel at 24/88.2 http://www.bso.org/bso/shop/productCategories.jsp;jsessionid=KEZHEKWA1MOAECTFQMGSFEQ?id=bcat13360032&_requestid=52942 As I said in my PFO article, the $50 price is the bargain of the century so far!

We plan to offer downloads of CSO Resound albums in varying resolution levels from cso.org in the near future, but we're not yet able to announce the details. Please stay tuned.

Thanks! Count me in for signing up as I have been very happy with the BSO high resolution download program. I still prefer the physical SACDs but I have noticed the more adventuresome programming doesn't always make it to SACDs so I choose high resolution in whatever form it presents itself.

I wish you the best of luck with both programs.

Not as far as I know.
The recordings I have downloaded were done by Soundmirror too.

I think what happens is the opposite of what happens with PCM recorded SACDs .
The DSD files have been converted to 24/88.2.

But heard on my Macbook Pro and via the new Sennheiser HD 800 headphones and the WEISS MINERVA DAC ,they sound excellent indeed.

I haven´t heard the DSD SACDs so I can´t comment on any differences.

all the best Chris

Hi Chris

Actually, there are three simultaneous recording modalities for every session. A MC DSD, and separate 88.2/24bit PCM, and a 2 CH 44.1/16bit for immediate conductor and musician review. But you are probably correct that the files have been converted from the DSD edit masters, so as to not duplicate all the editing work.
