There's an article in the April GRAMOPHONE about the recording session and the cycle.

No, but the article ends with a bizarre statement from Thomas, where in response to the question of how he will judge the final edit, he says, "I'll listen to it on a boom box, something that's not the state-of-the-art...That's how it will sound in real life".

Just who does he think is buying these recordings?

I think most recording engineers and producers need to know that their product will work on something less than the finest equipment. I'm OK with that so long as it doesn't become like pop music where everything is mixed and compressed for the lowest common denominator.

It's a long way from "less than the finest equipment" to a boom box.

It is a long way from a boom box to less than the finest equipment, but while artists should be aware of what the sound is like on basic equipment statements like this do nothing to further the cause of SACD. I would have preferred a statement along the lines that it ,would be recorded and played back on the best equipment so that people realised what they were missing. i.e SACD and trade in the "less than best" for more and better capable equipment. I hope the actual recording is up to normal SACD standards and is not "dumbed down"
