In the February/March 2009 edition of SOUND & VISION, it was announced that beginning in March, 1970's Lizard and 1974's Red will be released in hi-resolution surround with the 40th Anniversary surround remaster of InThe Court of the Crimson King targeted for an October release. Porcupine Tree's Steve Wilson (with comments and approval from Robert Fripp) is overseeing the surround remasters. Steve Wilson is currently releasing his own solo release in February in the DVD-A format so a question to readers of this site, Will the King Crimson catalog also be released in this format as there was NO mention of SACD. The reviewer, Ken Richardson, who has heard the Lizard and Red hi-def surround remasters is quoted as saying "I've heard the test remixes of Lizard and Red and surround fans won't be disappointed." Apparently, the entire King Crimson catalog will be released by the end of 2009 in hi-rez surround (but again, which format?)

I hope Fripp put them out on SACD.

It's my pure guess that the discs will be CD/DVD-A with a DTS 5.1 playback option. Wilson is the best surround mixer at this time, honing his skills with Elliot Scheiner on the first two Porcupine Tree 5.1 releases- IN ABSENTIA and DEADWING. Along with his side projects No-Man, Bass Communion, and his already released (in limited form) solo project, INSURGENTES (due out worldwide March 9, 2009), Steven Wilson has 9 titles out in 5.1. And they are all great. Thank you.

Having heard all these DVD-A releases myself (with the exception of INSURGENTES which is on pre-order) I have to say that the sound quality is absolutely superb - better than many of the rock SACDs I own.

If releasing the King Crimson albums on DVD-A will make them sound as good as the above mentioned albums, then bring them on! I'll buy each and every one of them.

Another pure guess is that Mr. Wilson is currently working on the new Porcucpine Tree album, and is juggling projects. To say the least, he is a perfectionist as far as anything that has his name on it. In the past 5.1 projects, he creates a brand new stereo mix and then developes the 5.1 mix off of that (DUH?). October will be here sooner than you think.

That's fair enough. In reality if it actually arrives by then it will have restored some faith in such announcements. I can't imagine what happened to last Octobers Black Sabbath Paranoid release.
