In no particular order:

Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 38-41 - Mackerras
Brahms: Symphony No. 1, Haydn Variations - Janowski
Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 - Janowski
Don Quijote de la Mancha - Savallanony
Beethoven: String Quartets Op. 18 No. 6, Op. 59 No. 1 - Quartetto Italiano
There will be duplication, but alas, with the exception of Pentatone's release in June of the Razumovsky 2 & 3, the rest of this classic set will never be released on SACD, con milli perdoni ai puristi qui, to be supplemented with the Quartetto Italiano's nine CD complete transversal of this incredible music, released in three sets as part of the Philips Originals series. The power, grace and wisdom of these great performances do indeed come through, RBCD notwithstanding.
Berlioz: Requiem - Sir Colin Davis
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique - Davis
Brahms: Piano Quartets - Beaux Arts Trio/Trampler
Puccini: Madame Butterfly - Leinsdorf
Puccini: Turandot - Leinsdorf
Bach, J.S.: Sinfonias, Bach, C.P.E./Vivaldi: 4 Oboe Concertos - Heinz Holliger
Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 - Colin Davis

How many of these would you have chosen if they were RBCD's?

As a manager of a record store for many years when I was single, I bought a dozen or so discs a month. I also received 30 to 50 more discs each month as "promotional copies". Leaving the industry allowed me to see the world of recordings the way the average consumer sees it: I no longer have nearly unlimited access to everything that comes out (as you undoubtedly still do in your position as a reviewer).

Instead my limited resources are spent very selectively.

Am I better off for this? Maybe not: I don't have the exposure to as many performances.

But in another way, I am better off: today each disc I buy is an event. I await with excitement the arrival of a disc I have ordered the way I did when I was ten years old! (I've been waiting since December 23rd for the new 2L Vivaldi disc, and it's driving me CRAZY!)

To be honest, I don't envy you--I pity you. Because you are not allowed the perspective to allow you to be appreciative.

This has shown up time and again in your negative comments on this site toward fellow members, toward industry members, and toward the performers on SACD who in your eyes "don't measure up".

Go to a web site devoted to historical performance if you simply want to talk about how much better some "older" performance is. Your insights are appreciated, your negativity is not. I spoke of buying selectively: often it is the passion of a member of this group that convinces me to try some new recording. I'm sorry you can't experience that either.

For my part, I'm happy to enjoy the gifts that so many modern artists are giving me. And I'm not going to waste my time worrying about whether or not there was ever a "greater" performance.

To Robert von Bahr, to Bissie, to Jared Saks, to all of you who put yourselves on the line IN A POSITIVE WAY giving the rest of us something to value: THANK YOU!!

And it is for this reason that I started this thread.

Oh dear...No Zeus, people on this site do not buy the best performances. If they did this site wouldn't exist.

A lot of excellent performances are still released,. BIS was mentioned and I champion these innovative labels every month in my magazines. But to be honest I no longer care if the Villa-Lobos series from BIS is SACD or RBCD, the excellence of the performances goes beyond the medium. How many of you bought the Fartein Valen series? Not many, huh? Would you have done so if they were SACD's? Probably yes, and you would have bought them for the wrong reason, in my opinion.

That is why we are at a site called sa-cd.net and not RBCD.net.

But I'm sure the products from RBCD.net would easily win the format war

An excellent series - I wouldn't be without these Choros and Bachianas........

The good news, albeit quite limited, is that Pentatone continues to remaster many great performances of the past for SACD release. This brings happiness for what we have and for what is still coming, and sadness for what might have been, had SACD succeeded in replacing RBCD. I find it particularly distressing that the RCA Living Stereo SACD series has been abandoned.

I specifically said my SACDs of the year. The majority of discs I've reviewed in the past year continue to be RBCDs and there are many of those to add to the DOTY list.

I happen to think the Zinman Mahler cycle is well worth hearing, whatever the format, and in the case of the Aho and saxophone quartets these works aren't available anywhere else.

I enjoy and support SACD but the performance comes first, whatever the format.

Nordic Voices (Bezaly/BIS) - ?????

I gather Nordic Voices is one of your recommendations but what did you intend to recommend from Bezaly ??

The disc is "Nordic Spell," not "Nordic Voices." And it is a CD, not SA-CD. Sorry, my mistake.

It includes Aho, Tomasson, and Lindberg flute concertos.
