Meh - my Marantz SA8003 SACD player has recently decided not to play some of my SACDs (which it used to play). Today, it won't play:

Prokofiev, Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3 - Pletnev

nor

Miles Davis Quintet: Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet

but it will play the CD layer on same. It just whiirrrrs a lot when you put the disc in ... and then gives up. The machine is only 18 months old. Should I try that CD lens cleaning widget someone mentioned (any references??) ... or refer it to the warranty people here in Australia?

This is how it always starts when the laser begins to go. The player won't read the sacd layer on a disc or two. You don't want to believe that it's anything serious until another disc or two fail to be read.

Best just to send it to Marantz Service Center and be done with it. Be sure to also send in the affected discs.

Well, I've just fitted my new ebay sourced laser mechanism. Seems to work.....

Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road which I could never get the player to read as a hybrid at all before is now recognised as a hybrid. Only problem is that the sound drops out every few seconds on both discs. Admittedly they're not in great condition - girlfriend had them in the car and didn't put them back in the case. :(

All other discs I've tried are absolutely fine - no drop outs and reads them as hybrids correctly.

Fingers are very firmly crossed at the moment!

Congratulations Xavier.

My $40 laser assembly from Singapore is still doing fine. So far, I have discovered 5 hybrid SACDs from my collection which still cause TOC reading problems (and which play fine on my other player, a Philips DVD963SA), but I can live with that.

My Marantz SA8003 got increasingly unwilling to play the SACD layer of my discs. It was happy to play the CD layer ... and also all single-layer SACDs ... but not the SACD layer on hybrids. Tragic!

I was told a repair would be about $400 (parts and labour) because ... in Australia they only offer 12 months warranty on parts ... and so I was on the verge of just buying a new Pearl Lite to replace it.

Then I thought ... what have I got to lose??? ... So I disconnected ... found some screwdrivers, opened it up, ... wiped the laser lens with a damp tissue , and /// presto ... my machine works perfectly again.

I realise it might not last, of course ... but so far ... so good! Quite pleased with myself :)

Only time will tell if the cleaning will last. Nothing like a low/no cost repair.
The $400 repair cost is standard for Australia, $300 for the transport and one hour shop time to replace it. You can replace the transport yourself, and save the labor cost. And you can save a lot if you can find one from a supplier other than Marantz, who will charge you $300.

I was shopping for a new SACD player after my XA-777ES wouldn't recognize the SACD layer this afternoon. After reading some posts here, I thought I would try again, it is cooler now, and machine has been off for two hours.
Works perfectly now!!!

Just saved 1300.

There are a few discs (hybrid) which my Marantz SA7 will only play immediately after it has been switched on. I can leave it on all day and it will happily play 99% of my SACDs (and 100% Redbook) - but it balks at these few if it's warmed up. Strange.

My Marantz SA-8001 used to refuse to play a number of discs a couple of years ago. I'd load the disc, and all I'd get as a readout was, "No Disc." I opened and closed the drawer; turned the machine on and off; hit a particular track number first, before hitting "Play," and tried a number of other "tricks." Ultimately, the problem simply stopped. I have no idea why it didn't work then, but has worked just fine for a couple of years now.

I use a CD "Cleaner/Restorer" called "L'Art du Son," which makes a very notable improvement in sound on any disc - CD or SACD. On a very few BIS recordings, and one old Denon CD, after applying L'Art du Son, those discs refused to play, and the "No Disc" display appeared again. After washing off the solution with diswashing detergent and water, the discs then played just fine. I even emailed Robert at BIS to see if he could offer an explanation, but he told me that his discs are manufactured at a facility that makes plenty of other discs for other labels, that the process isn't any different for a BIS disc than any of the others, and so the question remains unanswered.

Recently, a brand new BIS disc ("Endbeginning," by Polyphony) refused to play at all, again providing me with the "No Disc" display. Nothing I did worked. The CD layer would play in my cheapo Panasonic Blu-Ray player (which sounds like crap on anything other than a BluRay disc), but the disc wouldn't play at all in the 8001. ALL other discs I own play just fine, and so I returned the disc for a refund.

So, one disc out of over a hundred ain't so bad.

The Marantz SA-8001 uses an HOP1200 series laser. These are known for having read issues over time. They are also readily available from suppliers and can be easily replaced in the player by any electronics technician or knowledgeable diy'er.
