Hello everyone,

I live in Germany and on our local ebay site you can see lots of offers regarding "US" hybrid SACD´s. They are often much cheaper than than the "normal" ones. What is the difference? The language on the cover? Or do I have to expect lower quality possibly caused by playing it with my european CD player or whatever.

Best wishes...

Joerg

My guess is they're just cheaper because the dollar is so low against the euro.

Sometimes the track sequencing is different, but other than that, no differences. They will play fine in your 'european' player (I purchased almost all of my SACD's in US Amazon zShops).

I once read japanese versions can sometimes sound different (more high end shimmer), but I don't know if this is true.

Hi Joerg,

Can you give some examples? Pop or classical SACDs? Which labels?

Can you give more details? I'd imagine different countries may have different pressing quality, but not necessarily the sound quality.

It used to be the perceived wisdom that the country of origin (where the original recording was made) produced the best sound. I would imagine that the SONY SACD pressing plant in the US was probably based on their Japanese counterpart (even though they're two separate entities). But the ultimate chain of reproduction (including the mastering of the music) might be done differently in different countries and of course, it all ultimately comes down to your SACD player's ability to reproduce what's on the disc....sometimes a change in power cords and interconnects and tweaks to the player (Shakti stones, etc) can yield a world of difference. And lest we forget, some new remasters of classic albums sometimes go through complete metamorphoses and bear little resemblance to what was on the original master tape (instruments that were buried in the stereo mix suddenly emerge renewed in 5.1 remasters). Such is the case with the newly remastered DVD-A of "Song For Beginners."

In some cases the difference is much greater than such marginal effects, when there are two very different masters, such as with the Getz/Gilberto album. Just follow the reference given in this thread: /showthread/29816/29816/y#29816

Also not mentioned is sometimes the linar notes will be different. This could be anything from simply different languages or different /number/ of languages to actual notes being there or not.

Hello, IMHO, pressing quality determines the sound quality, especiallly the crucial dynamic range that is very evident in all the JAPAN pressed SACD's I own. They are:
All of the GENESIS releases (and will obtain the upcoming titles as well)
"DSOTM"
Kitaro- "Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai"
Elton John- "Goodbye....."
All of these sound MUCH fuller, IMO. Thanks
