The November issue of Gramophone is due out October 29th in the UK, subscribers may receive it a few days earlier.

Since in the past there has been much discussion about the lack of quality SACD players, the quiz prize for the Gramophone November edition is the Holfi Xandra universal player. I have had the opportunity to listen to this player and have been pleasantly surprised of how 'musical' it sounds. I hope the followers of this forum will take the time to visit their web site. These small dedicated companies also need our support.

The Holfi Xandra MP was reviewed in the last issue of Gramophone, the Awards Issue. An impressive player apparently, with an impressive price of £3570 or 4500 euros.

Sony BMG have been putting out some excellent SA-CD releases (under the Sony Classical, RCA and DHM labels). Maybe if people woke up to this fact instead of continually bemoaning their supposed lack of support there would be even more.

Yes.

Hardly anything is released under the Sony Classical label in any format, so complaining about the number of SACDs they're putting out is silly.

DHM has even more SACDs in the pipeline before the end of the year.

Great News. I will definitely buy the November issue to show my support to both Gramaphone and SACD.

Does anyone know when the November issue of Gramphone will be on newstands here in Canada? I called my local bookshops and the only issue in any of them at present is the September issue. I want to get my hands on that SA-CD.

But will future disc reviews note the SACD sound quality? Too many reviewers ignore it because they probably don't have the equipment.

Gramophone will be setting aside a specific column only for SACD reviews which I hope implies the reviewer will have the equipment to correctly judge the merits of the recording.

Amazing! Lets hope this isn't a one off and sign of more coverage to come.

The reviews in International Record Review (IRR) over the past few years have had increasingly frequent comments on the quality of the SACD sound. It appears that many more reviewers in IRR have an SACD player with at least stereo set-ups and some have multi-channel.
The same cannot be said for Gramophone over the same period where mention of the SACD sound is a rarity: hopefully the new column devoted to SACD in Gramophone will be a welcome change of policy. I look forward to receiving the next issue.

Many thanks for that information, Jared. I seriously considered stopping my "Gramophone" subscription when it came up for renewal in August but decided to persist with it and I've obviously now glad that I did.

Perhaps the editor, James Inverne, realised that the format wasn't going to go away as quickly as he and others had earlier thought and felt that it was time it was given its due.

If all those SACD samplers sell that will surely signal that the format is not only alive and well but becoming increasingly popular to boot.
