Most commonly it caused the mechanism to wind up to almost supersonic velocity before ejecting the disc, often still spinning at high speed. This often occurred while the player was idle. I did also note during and after such an episode that none of the control buttons worked and I had to switch the player off at the main switch and back on again before the logic functions would respond. Like your player, mine was also in and out of service over a long period and the experience was extremely frustrating. I hope in your case that they're able to find the cause ASAP but it may pay to ask the dealer / importer if they're aware of processor issues. For the record , my local Marantz importer is in Melbourne (Australia), and trades under the name 'Qualify'.
Hi Timpani

Sounds like the same issue I last had. The player stops reading the SACD or DVD disc. Since the player had been sent in, claims of overheating or magnetic issues had been blamed on. Since it got back, when the player has been left idle for a period of time... the buttons failed.

Any idea who you have spoken to? As my unit is from Qualifi in Melbourne too...

Cheers!

Hi Monotone
The Service Manager's name in Nick and he would be best person to consult re the aforementioned problems. Given that they have also had my player in for tests and analysis, I would have expected them to be right on track by now. Indeed, they also told me that the processor chips (Furore and Mace) were subject to overheating and that Marantz (Japan) had issued a work spec to correct the problems. In short, this workspec involves the fitting of thermally conductive blocks to the top of each IC, such that heat is conducted to the copper chassis. The work spec is completed with a CPU reset and ROM flash to load the latest firmware. Note that the above mods do NOT involve replacement of the processor chips themselves. These chips are high-density surface mount devices that are not deemed replaceable. As an electronics engineer myself, I was unconvinced that the mods would provide a probable long term fix, so it was at this point that I negotiated a replacement deal. I was fortunate that my player was still within the 3 year 'electronics' warranty period, and that I had also accumulated some credit points from the dealer (Len Wallis Audio) after they originally (and incorrectly) diagnosed that the loader/laser mechanism needed to be replaced. The warranty only extends for one year on mechanical parts, so the replacement was at my expense.

I wish you good luck because you WILL need it. If your player is still within warranty, then my advise is to push for a replacement. Your dilemma will be that Marantz no longer has a real replacement.

I bet you were really disappointed when you found that certain limitations in the SA-12's design - for want of a better way of describing the problems you experienced -- which should clearly have been found during pre-production testing, were found wanting. I know I'd be and it goes without saying that we clearly BOTH hope that similar problems do not arise with the SA-11S1. I've had my CD-7 for a number of years now and it has never put a foot wrong, and I'm obviously hopeful that the SA-11 will provide similar reliability. Fingers crossed!

We'll have to see how Marantz treat their 'high-end' or so called premium range users...

I'll keep everyone posted.

Marantz have announced the SA-15s1, obviously modeled on the SA-11s1 but I gather using the older CS-4397 (same as the SA-14) instead of the new NEC DAC chip. The SA-15s1 goes for less than half the price of the SA-11s1. Details (in Japanese) here:

I have an SA-14 as does our host, Stephen. I couldn't be happier with the thing, but all of this talk about the new model 11 has me salivating like one of Pavlov's dogs.

The only thing that I cannot do with the SA-14 is play those black CDR disks that the more zealous audiophiles claim can actually sound better than the original from which it's made. Could any of you chaps who have the 11 try this out and let us know if the unit will play a black CDR?

Thanks

I've just tried playing a black CD-R and my SA-11 treated it no differently from any other disc; that is, it played it without any fuss. By the way, when I first saw one of them (sent to me by a friend) I thought it was a joke. Can anyone give me any technical details about their composition etc as they seem so different from other types of CD-R, as least in appearance.

The more I listen to my SA-11S1, the more impressed I become. It's unquestionably a magnificent player of both SACDs and CDs and I haven't, for one moment, regretted the money I spent on it.

Hi, has anybody figured out what is the best filter for Cd on the SA11s1 ?.. the manual is very vague in terms of what is the best, or at least so from my minimum knowledge. Is it true to say that no matter what filter is used, the data is anyway upsampled ... thanks

Use what you like best. Have a listen to all options and then simply select the one that has your preference. I have read a lot of magazine reviews and no reviewer seems to agree. I prefer selection 1. Noise shaping seems to bring out the voices a bit better on CD, which I sometimes use.

Hello !!!

i own a marantz DV8400 and i use it to listen to my sacds with a YBA initial and a pair of cabasse farella 402. According to my elements, could you tell me if it is worth buying the SA-11S1 ? I want to use the DV for video only. do you think that the SA-15 would be a better match ? (i will use only the rca outputs of the new SACD player)

Thank you

steinway
