Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Is it the discs? Is it the player?
Likely both. My old Marantz SA-14 plays up with some discs that the cheap transport in the Sony reads fine. Some time ago I sent a couple of problem discs to Philips for investigation and was basically told that the discs were within spec, but only just. I have NEVER had a problem with a Japanese pressing. So, in summary, if you're having problems with more than a handful of discs I'd get the transport cleaned/re-aligned/replaced. This is the only way to insulate yourself from unavoidable marginal pressings.

The sad thing about these "marginal" pressings is that no European or American label is immune. They are at the mercy of what the pressing plant turns out.

Please be patient with my ignorance, but I am an "old dude" with 1970s vintage Marantz equipment...a Marantz Model 115 B AM/FM tuner and a Marantz Model 1250 power amp with a Pioneer turntable and Klipsch "Heresy" speakers. System is great for listening to old vinyl and great FM radio reception.
Here comes the ignorant part...how do I connect a CD player to the power amp?
Inquiring minds need to know...

I recently got one of these and felt the urge to participate in this thread. The price was within my budget and I decided to finally go for it after months of waiting.
I would like to hear from people who still own this player eventhough it has been discontinued for a while now. Did you get the itch to upgrade to the SA-11S2 or SA-7S1? Any problems with the SA-11S1 such as certain discs not playing? Have you needed to contact Marantz? How was the experience?
