I've been corresponding with Jack Lawson of Audio Salon, with the view of buying these recordings from him, and it seems that Esoteric was really intending them as "carrots" for customers who bought its CD/SACD players. When the discs become available in Japan, there is quite a delay before the export market is considered.

An article in my local newspaper this morning made alarming reading. The yen is at an unprecedented high, which obviously affects Japanese exporters, and Sony is considering laying off 16,000 employees world-wide as well as either cutting back or closing down products that are proving to be uneconomic. (I hope that doesn't include SACD!!) Panasonic is considering similar moves.

What that means is that these Esoteric SACDs are now going to be mighty expensive, no matter what.

I hope not, high definition music is the future, moreover SACD's aren't that big cost generator for Sony, so they have to look for savings in other areas, maybe Sony will finally dead CD's as CD sales are dropping 20% each year bringing millions if not billions of dollars losses in sales worldwide, there's no future in low resolution discs...

I got it last week and I strongly recommend it. The piano and the orchestra sound wonderful. There are lots of detail: you can hear and "see" through the orchestra and you can hear all the nuances and interjections of the piano. The lows are powerful and the highs are extended and clear, wih the exception of 2 or 3 ocasions, where I detect some congestion on orchestral tuttis. The sound is more analogue-like than the the sound of the Decca SACDs released by Universal Japan some years ago. Curzon's playing is very delicate, which I think is very appropriate for these concertos. The packaging is similar to the packaging of the xrcd's from Japan. I hope this will be the first of a (long) series of Decca SACDs from Esoteric.

I wonder if the congestion that you talk about may be caused by the fact that some peaks are clipped at full scale.

The disc sounds pretty good though.

I hope that they will do the Curzon-Szell Brahms 1

let me look again, hmm... you're right, there is only an information on how they plan to release a DECCA Esoteric SACD Series, and the title of next release

but please check for example stereosound.jp ...
http://66.102.9.104/translate_c?hl=pl&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://www.stereosound.co.jp/hivi/detail/newsheadline_2655.html&usg=ALkJrhhkDbjPQsdI3PJ4UVOkzlDSPxWEhg

My analysis indicates that the SACD was derived from the Decca 96/24 re-mastering that was used by Decca in generating the Legends series re-issue of the Curzon disc (468-491). A frequency analysis of the Esoteric disc shows exactly the same CRT monitor peaks in the region of 15500-16000 Hz as occur on the Legends CD - something extremely unlikely to be by chance, especially as more modern monitors do not have this characteristic.

You can make the Legends CD sound much more like the Esoteric by boosting at 70 Hz (about 2 dB gain), 400 Hz (2.3 dB gain), and 4 kHz (about 1.8 dB gain), use a Q ~ 2.25, except that the saddle will be about 0.5 dB high.

MusicDirect is listing 4 Esoteric releases for later this year. The 2 DG reissues already listed on sa-cd.net (Schoenberg, Berg, Webern - Karajan and Brahms: Symphony No. 4 - Kleiber) are scheduled for November, while the 2 Decca reissues below will follow in December:

Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 & Karelia Suite (Maazel & Vienna Philharmonic)
Tchaikovsky: Scenes from Swan Lake (Fistoulari & Concertgebouw)

The price per disc went up by 10 bucks from the first batch, to US$69.95 each.

The Fistoulari recording is quite superb, in my opinion.

For those who won't fork out for the SACD, it is available as an excellent CD from buywell.com or here:

and from Amazon sellers

2 new Decca reissues by Esoteric, Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 & Karelia Suite with Maazel (http://www.esoteric.jp/products/esoteric/essd90020/indexe.html) and Tchaikovsky's Scenes from Swan Lake with Fistoulari (http://www.esoteric.jp/products/esoteric/essd90019/indexe.html) will be released next week

They were released in Japan on 30/10/2009, to be more precise.

The Sibelius SACD, specially the Karelia Suite (simply amazing performance and sonics), is the best one on this series, so far.

I don't think it's in the UK yet - we get stocks if no-one else wants any.

The repressed DGs are being shipped and are due in the UK during the first week of December, as are the Deccas.
