Just for comparison:

SCD-XA1200ES is 15.8lbs (7.2kg)
SCD-XA3000ES is 18.1lbs (8.2kg)

Both of those have MCH analogue outputs with associated DACs etc.

The weights I could find are as follows:

SCD-XA9000ES: 15.9 kg
SCD-XA3000ES: 8.2 kg
SCD-XA1200ES: 9.5 kg
SCD-XA5400ES: 10.2 kg

As far as I can see, also the 5400 has twin R-core transformers but I haven't seen a picture of the internals yet. I suspect the difference is mostly in the housing. Look at these two pictures from the back and compare the covers: The 5400's is obviously a bended sheet of metal. The 9000's looks more like extruded aluminium. The 'build quality' of the electronics then is likely very comparable, that of the cabinets isn't.

What are the options for the "priority" setting on the back. It looks like one option is "MULTI" (multi-channel over HDMI), and the other is "2CH".

Well, its 13 lbs lighter, not 15 (but not to split hairs) ... On the XA777ES and XA9000ES, a lot of that weight comes from the side panels, top panel, and thick front panel with glass.

Internally, I wouldn't be surprised if the XA5400ES is the same, or very similar.

The hefty outer shell isn't as important to me, but i'm sure it will be important to a lot of folks who believe in that whole "put the player on little cones to dampen vibration" sort of thing.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess... 22lbs is still pretty significant.

Ultimately, I really only care how it sounds. If it sounds better than the XA9000ES, I'm fine with it being only 22lbs, especially since it's only half the price of the previous models.

Perhaps with the introduction of this new "statement" player, we can expect more multi-channel and stereo releases from SONY Japan. I was seriously considering the Cary 306 Pro, but at $8000 (US), I have been hesitant.....and who does SACD better than the inventor of the format.......too bad one cannot compare the two units!

I wouldn't count on it for two reasons:
1) the consumer electronics division is totally separated from Sony's music business
2) the 'statement' Sony Computer Entertainment made by bringing millions of SACD-compatible PlayStation3s to market had no such effect either.

Looks cheep, can you still get DSD decoding if you don't use their receiver?
