Stereo only.

i do since i can not afford a mc system.

i have made some comparisons in order to compare rbcd and sacd in
stereo.

First system:

Philips DVD 963SA (500 USD)
Audio Innovations 300 MK-ii (tube amplifier)
Audio Note AN-J/Spa speakers
Audio Note AN-S standard level silver interconnect
Audio Note AN-L copper speaker cable
Audio Note standard steel stands

Second one:

Audio Note CD player Two (approximately 3500 USD in Hungary) -- an rbcd player
Audio Innovations 300 MK-ii (tube amplifier)
Audio Note AN-J/Spa speakers
Audio Note AN-S standard level silver interconnect
Audio Note AN-L copper speaker cable
Audio Note standard steel stands

the two systems differs from each other in the digital source only.

in spite of being much cheaper philips DVD 963 SA was a bit better
in stereo. we were listening to the same recordings (rbcd layer in
contrast to sacd layer).

of course i know that one experiment is only one experiment. however
this was the point when i decided not to purchase rbcd-s anymore.

While I'd be the first person to acknowledge the sonic benefits of SACD it strikes me as short sighted to stop buying RBCDs. First, there aren't enough SACDs around to offer choice in some repertoire;second restricting yourself to SACD means you are missing out on a vast range of excellent performances on RBCD.

As an example, I have just auditioned the new Kofman DSCH 11th Symphony from MDG and while it is an excellent recording it doesn't even begin to compete with the best versions on RBCD. A/B comparisons with Kondrashin's legendary Melodiya performance reinforces the point. Despite its age it still sounds immediate and immensely involving. Kondrashin also brings out all the complexities/ambiguities that Kofman simply ignores.

Interestingly, as good as the MDG recording is the old Melodiya sounds just fine, somewhar narrow in terms of soundstaging but amazingly weighty and full of thrust. A performance like no other, it blows Kofman right out of the water.

thank you for your remarks. i share your opinion when you say that there are
a lot of musically excellent recordings released on rbcd. what is more their
number is increasing. on the other hand i have only 139 sacds and there are
a lot i would like to get. at this point one has to make a decision what to
prefer and how to go on.

i add something to this, the number of my rbcds is much greater than that
of my sacds. i also listen to them. otherwise this fact had influenced me
before my decision.

One more here. Despite everything else my wife puts up with 2 more Impulse horn speakers would not go down well.

I know one day I will take the plunge but the equipment will have to suit my tastes and be affordable.

I only buy RBCDs for my iPod and car. I hear a huge difference between SACD and RBCD.

Order of preference for me is

1) SACD
2) Vinyl
3) CD

Hello, new to this site, glad I found it. I listen to stereo sacd, because I have a good 2 channel system and don't have a room suitable for multichannel. I do have an Esoteric SA-60 player which will play the mch mixes in downmix mode. On the Roxy Music Avalon sacd I did notice a difference in the mix from the stereo mix, quiter, different emphasis. But I'm not really interested in mch at this time. Someday maybe?
