Discussion: Haydn: String Quartets Op. 20 - Pellegrini Quartett

I've been in love with the Hagen's since it first appeared. This one doesn't quite displace it: more severe, but still insightful. All in all, I would recommend it.
Rear channels are a little too prominent, but overall, good sound.
What does the one who doesn't recommend it think?

Thanks Arthur
I've got the Lindsay's and Mosaiques - I take it this is not original instruments?
I've been begging for Opus 20 for ages - can't wait till I get this!

I would hesitate if I were you. I find the the performances under inflected and rhythms mechanical. Arthur's 'severe' rather under states the case.

Neither am I very impressed with this disc. Judging from the booklet notes, their manner of performance is deliberate -- and there is no mention of the vintage of their instruments. It is good to have Opus 20 on SACD, but to my ears these discs are unremarkable in sound and performance.

In fairness I must add that I am no doubt partly underwhelmed because the Pellegrini arrived in the same mail and were totally eclipsed by Kuijken Two Generations which is the best damned quartet sound on disc I've ever heard (with the possible exception of the Fry Street Beethoven).

The Quatuor Mosaïque recordings are amazingly good for redbook CD.
