What's going on here?
I've already bought her solo flute concertos on SACD.

The previous disc, which was once sold at a promotional price with the 2005 BIS catalogue, seems to be OOP.

Mozart: Flute Concertos - Bezaly

While I have no idea whether the solo flute pieces are recycled from BIS SACD-153901, that prior release doesn't include the flute and harp concerto as this new one apparently does. I imagine that Robert will clear this up for us soon. Personally I'm hoping it's newly recorded with more appropriate cadenzas than the anachronistic ones by Kalevi Aho, which to my ears marred an otherwise exceptional disc.

"When the greater part of the programme on this disc was released as the BIS 2005 Catalogue Disc, the response was electrifying. Sharon Bezaly was described as ‘God’s gift to the flute’ in The Times (UK), and a quote from the review in BBC Music Magazine is representative: ‘Bezaly's exquisite, technically immaculate, compelling playing sets new standards in this repertoire, as do Kalevi Aho's stunning cadenzas, composed especially for this recording.’ Other reviewers agreed, and the disc received top marks in Le Monde de la Musique, Crescendo, Musica and other magazines as well as on radio stations and web sites such as Classics Today. This staggeringly successful title – 145 000 copies sold worldwide! – is now made available again with the important inclusion of a newly made recording of the Concerto for Flute and Harp. At a session in October 2007, we reunited the performers and recording crew of the 2005 disc in the original venue, with the addition of the eminent harpist Julie Palloc as co-soloist. Furthermore, Finnish composer Kalevi Aho again provided the cadenzas for the work, as he had for the other concertos on the disc. The result is not to be missed – a 24 carat, complete collection of all Mozart’s works for flute and orchestra, on a hybrid SACD with the extremely generous playing time of 81 minutes and 52 seconds!."

One problem I'm finding with this disc is that, because it's the same catalog number, most online places still show the old disc, if not the old info. I can't figure out if it's 'safe' to buy it and know I'll get the new one -- Arkivmusic.com's entry is still completely the old one, for instance.

Is it the same catalogue number?

The old release should be BIS-SACD-153901, the new one BIS-SACD-1539. Or was the "01" only added later?

A warning and a recommendation:

this SACD is exactly the same as the very-much praised "Mozart: Flute Concertos - Bezaly" with one big exception: the Flute/Harp Concerto has been recorded and added to make this "Mozart: the Complete Flute Concertos - Bezaly". The previous disc (BIS-SACD-153901) has been deleted and replaced by this one (BIS-SACD-1539), being the only one to have all the 5 Mozart works on a single disc and a playing time of almost 82 minutes to boot. Thus all the praise lavished on the previous disc applies to this one as well.

Yes, I am partial indeed, but, as a private person, I will take the liberty of recommending a disc that basically never leaves my player and gives me so much unadultered pleasure. Why shouldn't I have that right, as long as I am honest about it? Yes, I am Sharon's husband and yes, I am the record label owner, but yes, I have my ears and musical integrity intact as well.

Best - Robert

PS: I posted this as a "review", but the powers that be evidently are disqualifying me from expressing a private opinion of a certain product just because I happen to own the company that releases it. This has now been incorporated in the official guidelines as of today. Frankly, I find this rather insulting. As a private person, I feel that I should be allowed to have an opinion of any products, incl. my own, and I should be allowed to express it, as long as I come clean with my affiliation to it. I would have thought that it might be interesting for others to read what the executive producer thinks, in the rare case when something is so truly outstanding as this one, and it would seem obvious to me that this would be used only extremely sparingly, or the desired effect would vanish. If I would exhort every production we make, I would be deemed totally unreliable - and uninteresting to boot. Personally I would be extremely interested to know what Jared Sachs or Giel Bessels find truly exceptional in their resp. catalogues! Maybe this site should start a sub-site: "The Producer Talks" or something similar?
Obviously I have no power to oppose this treatment (my "review" will be deleted), but, for once, I do disagree with Stephen.

The review guidelines have been updated to clarify the intent that reviews are solely for end-users of the product. This isn't a reflection on your contribution which was innocuous. I certainly believe that you're entitled to hold and express views on the worth of your product ... we all need convictions. This forum is a better vehicle for such views.

(The original post is moved to the BIS thread where it more properly belongs.)
