Thread: Experiences in HDMI Audio?

Hi,

some time ago a friend of mine bought a Pioneer DV-600AV player with HDMI output and connected it to Yamaha RX-V1800.

With this setup when listening multichannel SACDs, if you turn the RX-V1800 audio to "Pure Direct" mode i.e. you leave the Yamaha "audio improvements" (that by the way suck*) out of the signal path, the system automatically changes to stereo playback!!! This means that Pioneer plays back multichannel audio over HDMI but the amplifier only uses the main channels .... what a joke!!!

So far we have not been able to find a remedy to this problem and it is really difficult to recommend HDMI multichannel audio delivery to anybody. Connecting analog signals works always and also you know what is going on.

What sort of experience do you have?

Synchronization problems??? Any other problems? HDMI is actually a notorious interface from professional video system installer's point of view. The compatibility of products from different vendors has been poor, the cable is difficult install because it is thick and lacks locking at both ends, etc. I would assume that the incompatibilities are even worse when it comes to audio because audio is just an additional feature in this digital video interface. And the complexity is increasing with each new version of this interface.

br,
Esa

* Yamaha has implemented a "room correction" that actually makes the sound fuzzy and you really cannot talk about any kind of "sound stage" if this correction is active. You will also have 7.1 playback with 5.1 input signals ... and the sound was awful.

I wonder if the problem in this particular case is the Yamaha - although it may be the Pioneer. It seems obvious that either the player elects to send only the stereo channels or the receiver is connected (via the HDMI) only to the stereo channels. It would be interesting to test another receiver. But yes I have read in several places that HDMI is a shaky set-up...anything but robust.

I poseted a message a few weeks back regarding the Pioneer 600 and I recall that I read something that states a multi-channle playback problem via HDMI.

I was planning to use this player with an Onkyo 805 as that accepts a native DSD signal, so I wanted to gain the benefit of the receiver's processign power....which it sounds to me like is infinitely better than the Yamaha's!!!!

I'm using the "lowly" PS3 connected to Denon 3808ci though HDMI, works great.

The PS3 with the new bitmap 3 option is an audiophilic marvel!

All that can be found is that it "optimises CD and SACD playback for the PS3". Also, ahve read that it eliminates distortion. This makes sense as there are 5 volume settings on the PS3:
-2
-1
Normal
+1
+2

Previously, if I had it on one of the + settings, there was distortion coming from the speakers.

After bitmap 3 there is none of that.

And whereas before I considered the PS3 a satisfactory SACD player and poor CD player, now I would have to say it really is audiophile (or what I woudl imagine audiophile might sound like) - in other words, it's hard to think that coudl be any more data on the silver disk it is spinning!! This is also testament to the DAC and processign abilities of the Onkyo 805 receiver!
