The recent Berlioz [ an excellent set ] and the Handel Messiah have both been SACD-only issues, but the new Macmillan disc is CD without SACD.

Anybody know what's going on?

Which Berlioz set do you mean? There is a Berlioz 12CD-set on their homepage:

It seems that, just like other classical labels still supporting SACD, LSO live randomnly selects some titles to be released as SACDs.

Not random at all. The sales from a Macmillan disc will be considerably less than a disc of the Messiah. The cost would not justify the expected income.

Presumably the recent Berlioz referred to above is the L'Enfant du Christ.

Sorry - L'Enfance du Christ

"I see Davis is scheduled to conduct performances of the Berlioz Te Deum with the LSO at the Barbican on Sun the 22nd & Mon the 23rd Feb 2009 perhaps this might lead to an LSO Live SACD issue at some point - I wish!"

Is there anyone at LSO Live monitoring this thread who can respond to this hope?

What with performances at the Barbican in Sept 08 of Walton's Belshazzar's Feast and performances of Verdi's Requiem in Jan 2008 that make's him pretty busy at over 80! The LSO has pages on Facebook and has posted decent size quality versions of the 'Flash' videos that appear on the main LSO website. A recently one has Davis & Rob Cowan talking about British music in the 1930s there is mention of Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, VW’s 4th Sym & the influence of Elgar - link below will hopefully take you to the page with the video. There is a link above the video to take you to the other videos that have been posted ...

I think the sound quality of the LSO Live issues (heard in multi-channel) has improved markedly over the initial releases. The Mahler 3rd with Gergiev has stunning impact from the percussion in the first movement. The Britten "Child of our Time" is IMO, just flawless. Verdi's Manzoni Requiem has hair raising dynamics and now the Gergiev Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet generates a level of excitement and anticipation for new releases that I have not experienced in quite a while! These guys really know what to do with percussion, but the string sound is really sweet! The woodwind have character and depth that is genuinely engrossing. I am really looking forward to the Davis Nielsen cycle!

Now I guess I am over-reaching here, but since the superb and unfortunately under-rated violinist, Lara St. John records for a label she herself owns, Perhaps something could be arranged with her to record some 20th century violin concertos, Bartok, Shostakovitch, Schnittke, Berg ??? Of course someone would have to invite her to give those performances - but they ought to, Oh yes, they really should. I would love to hear her Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Bruch also with the LSO under the appropriate conductor. She is a superb musician. Just listen to any of the below and recognize a highly individualistic voice with the technique to do whatever she wants the instrument to do.

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, Piazzolla - Lara St. John

Hindson, Corigliano, Liszt - Lara St. John

Bach: The Six Sonatas & Partitas for Violin Solo - Lara St. John

The circumstance of her recording for her own label would allow her to participate in a series with any orchestra's label as well. This is an opportunity LSO Live, or BSO classics or CSO Resound should not miss.

We have been reminded by Chaz Jenkins on this forum that LSO Live record everything in DSD. It is true that some earlier releases were RBCD only but Chaz has signalled intent that LSO Live may at some point in time release SACD's of material not previously released in 'our' format. We are expecting the one Sibelius Symphonies disc released only as a RBCD to be re-released as a SACD very soon.

Chaz is on here from time-to-time, otherwise e-mail him from the LSO Live website.

Although perhaps not appropriate for this thread, I would put in a plug for the LPO and their in-house label of the same name, which has released some SA-CD's in the past and may do so again.

Their preferred venue, the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall, sounds spectacular on RBCD, much better than the Barbican in my opinion. I look forward to the Vanska Sibelius (being performed this week) which I believe they are recording - if we are fortunate, perhaps we will see an SA-CD or two from this cycle.
