I'm new to the whole sacd thing. I just bought my sony scd-ce595 ( I know its not top of the line). Recommendations as to what receiver I should get? Hoping to spend no more than $600

If you try the very nice FAQ on this site, you will find a lot of useful information about sacd. The "Practical use / Playback equipment" section in particular should be quite helpful.

To answer your question, if you want to use the analog out from your player to enjoy multi-channel, I think almost any receiver will do. On the other hand, if you want somewhat future prove and use digital as input later on, a receiver with HDMI would be a better choice, like Onkyo 705 (within your price range, but only accept PCM as input) or Onkyo 805 (cost more but with added benefit of accepting DSD as well). In general, Onkyo is quite good brand, though I prefer the pricier Denon a bit more. Either way, it's very personal thing and both should serve you quite well, just like Yamaha, Pioneer etc. etc.

Enjoy!

Sony receivers are very affordable and usually manufactured to SACD specifications regarding frequency ranges etc. Any ES model will do. (ES models used to be more expensive "top of the mid-range" models over your price limit, but nowadays the ES logo is used for cheaper models as well). If you read magazines like U.K.s What HiFi you might have noticed them as their premium choice for years in your desired price range.

Onkyo TX-SR605 (image above)is a very price-worthy receiver (in your price range) that uses the new HDMI 1.3a interface and carries an on-board dts HD Master Audio decoder, which will give you the best audio today and tomorrow with future movie and video concert titles on blu-ray.

Some people don't really trust the HDMI interface with SACD, but it works, anyway, if the receiver carries HDMI 1.2 and above. But with this receiver also you can use standard interconnects, too, and it will most surely be quite satisfactory!

Welcome to the world of SACD. Now music sounds better than ever!

If the player can output PCM over HDMI then a HDMD 1.1 receiver can be used as well.

I would second a recommendation for a Denon - I have had a 4802 in my multichannel system for a number of years, and have been very pleased with it. I had a problem with it at one point and had a Yamaha in the system instead - the Denon sound noticeably more liquid. If there isn't a new one in your price range, you might consider used - for example, my 4802 is about 3 generations back, but has everyone I need for multichannel playback (analog 5.1 inputs!).

So is the Onkyo 805 the only one of those SR series (605, 705, 805) that decodes DSD over HDMI?

Still, the only Sony AV Receiver that accepts DSD input via HDMI is the STR-DA5300ES (called TA-DA5300ES in Japan). The lower models in the range (4300, 3300) can't handle DSD.

Of those, yes. The SR875 and SR905 do, too.

Given the OP already has a Sony SCD-CE595, which doesn't output DSD via HDMI, I'd recommend the Yamaha 661. The "street price" of the 661 from an authorized dealer is about USD$400.00 and it is compatible with HDMI v1.2. Perhaps when the OP upgrades the 595 to a player which can output DSD using HDMI, the receiver will still be "current".

Hello,

does the new Onkyo TX-NR1008 is a DSD compatible HDMI receiver?
