According to the HMV Japan website Sony Music Entertainment will release Leonard Bernstein's complete Mahler cycle on SACD (hybrid discs). It is due for release on October 3.

I hope this will be the beginning of another series of re-issues in the Super Audio format.

This is very interesting. We're talking his '60's cycle with the NYPO? I hope they will be able to do something with the original sound, which has very "hot" strings, anemic bass and too much compression. I listened to the 2nd and 7th on lp and was very disappointed. Double checking, I also listened to both on reel to reel and the tapes were surprisingly similar to the lp's. I don't know if these master tapes warrant the high-res treatment. Too bad his DG remake hasn't come out on SACD. DG did some great recording work. The DG Mahler 2nd is the crown jewel IMHO and the finale is absolutely cosmic. Being a back seat driver, Sony should re-issue the complete Walter and Stravinsky works with the Columbia Symphony--most of the performances speak for themselves, and the recordings are worthy, very worthy of SACD. I wonder why they can't release MTT's Carmina Burana with the Cleveland?

I'd much rather see:

1. Leon Fleisher's complete Epic/CBS recordings. You can probably fit them all on a dozen discs. And I bet it would be profitable since his new recordings are selling well and get tons of free press (and many of the recordings are OOP).

2. More Szell DSD reissues. Not exactly audiophile material, but recent DSD reissues (early SACDs, new Great Performance and Mozart box set) have boasted significant to night-and-day improvements from previous releases.

3. Ormandy. Columbia/CBS did give him good sound, and it would be nice to hear some of his best recordings in the best possible sound.

That's fantastic. By the way, it has been recorded in DSD surround.

Here is what producer James Mallinson told The Stereophile about the CSO Resound project:

"Recording in surround future-proofs the project, even though there are obviously some issues about the future viability of SACD as a release medium," he explained by phone. "Hi-rez formats will undoubtedly have a future, and I believe someone should embrace them. Nonetheless, the CSO is mainly a concert-giving organization that has just gone into the record business for the first time. They're going through a steep learning curve, and being very conservative in how they approach the venture. They don't want to commit to things they might ultimately feel they ought not to have done. So they're taking things one step at a time.

"On a personal level, I believe very strongly in hi-rez surround. It adds a whole different dimension that you're incapable of realizing with two-channel 16/44.1. Those who say CDs miss an element of analog are, in my opinion, correct. The standard format gives you the carapace of the music, but it hasn't got the emotional core that DSD gives you. When you add the surround component as well, it really puts the music in real space and removes it from the speakers. If you close your eyes, and it's properly done, you feel like you're in a real concert space."
