Hi everyone,

Today in the mail, I received a brand new, sealed in plastic copy of the SACD "Engines Of Creation" by Joe Satriani. Considering it's selling for $99 currently on Amazon, I thought I had struck gold for only $23 on eBay ...

Upon my initial listen this evening, however, I was utterly crushed to find that the original track 4 "Until We Say Goodbye" is completely missing from the disc and the original track 10 "Slow And Easy" is also repeated on track 6.

I have e-mailed both the party that sold me the disc as well as the webmaster of Satriani's site in hopes that something positive will come out of this, but in the meantime, I feel somewhat cheated out of some hard earned money and a lot of anticipation to hear this long out of print SACD.

Any similar stories or recommendations about what I could do about this besides sending angry e-mails?

Thanks for listening,

Dan

No need for angry emails, especially to the ebay seller who provided you with a new disc below the selling prices you say it fetches. I'd suggest that if it disappoints you so much, sell it on Amazon.

It would be interesting to know if this defect is present on all SACD pressings of this title. This is something that would have happened during authoring of the disc, not during manufacturing.

This reviewer did not have (or did not notice) the problem:

But the SACD is so rare and obscure that few reviews can be found.

My pressing seems perfectly fine. I'm only familiar with the SACD but I have a total of 11 tracks as advertized. Track 4 is there and tracks 6 and 10 are different songs. I've tried it on both my Sony and Marantz players with the same result. I've never had any SACD out of 600+ have problems on my Sony ES players but I have about a dozen that cannot play on my Marantz DV-7600 Universal player. If you can try it on a different SACD player (friend or store), you could confirm if it's your player or a faulty SACD.

Thanks. Angry is not the word or tone I've been using, just dissappointed. I don't want to sell it due to it's super rare status. After all, all songs except "Until..." are there and Mark Wilder did a good job on the SACD stereo transfer. I only wish it had been done in multichannel, too.

If this happened during authoring, then wouldn't all U.S. pressings be affected? I haven't yet come across anyone with this same problem.

It reminds me of the time I bought the newly remastered edition of "Sorcerer" by Miles Davis while on vacation in Canada - tried to play it - no music!

True enough, as I haven't quite mastered my player yet. It's an OPPO DV-980H which was released in August this year and has all firmware updates installed. It hasn't failed me with any other disc so far, including other Sony discs like this one so I was certain it was the disc itself.

While I wait for a response from Satriani or his webmaster (convenient since we all live in SF) I will most definitely check other SACD players and confirm whether it's the disc or my OPPO.

Thanks

Dan

All the licensed/authorized/legitimate copies would be the same. If the seller is selling a new disc to you way below the usual price, he probably bought it for even less. That would be two indicators that the disc isn't an official product, but some kind of pirated copy.

Hi everyone,

Well, it appears my defective SACD story has taken a turn for the worst...

I was scheduled to visit OPPO's headquarters this Friday to verify whether the disc is truly defective or my OPPO player is having problems reading the disc. When I went to locate the disc this evening, I could not find it. Without going into the embarassing details of how I let this happen, it appears I have most likely misplaced it for good which means I am now feverishly looking for yet another copy online...

If anyone reading this post happens to own a copy of this particular SACD and is willing to consider selling it to me, please e-mail me at dbmay75@yahoo.com with your best price.

*sigh*

Thanks,
Dan
