Hi everyone,

As a budgeting audiophile, I can't afford to make any mistakes so I'm leaning on members of this wonderful site for the truth and nothing but. Here are my questions:

1) Is anyone familiar with the SACD and/or DVD-A of "Gaucho" by Steely Dan? Is there anything extra on the DVD-A making it a more worthwhile purchase over the SACD?

2) Is anyone familiar with the 2004 DVD-A and/or the 2007 CD of "I Robot" by Alan Parsons? I'm considering purchasing the CD over the DVD-A for once, both because the CD includes Bonus Tracks and the DVD-A is only 2-channel (this reminds me of the mistake they made with releasing "Thriller" on stereo SACD)

Thanks in advance - your product knowledge and time is highly appreciated.

Dan

I have the Steely Dan: Gaucho and find it to be very nice, and as it compares to the DVD-A I have no idea.

1) Not familliar with the Gaucho DVD-A. The SACD is very good in terms of sound quality.

2) The I Robot DVD-A (or HDAD as they call it) is one of my best sounding discs! Classic Records has done a great job on this one. Audiophile quality mastering and 24/192 resolution.
It is becoming hard to find, though. If you can still find one you should immediately buy it! (Or buy two and sell one of them on Ebay in a couple of years;) Also, if you can find Eye in the sky and Turn of a friendly card on Classic Records DVD-A, they are equally great sounding.

Yes, by all means get the DVD-A. The I Robot and Turn of a Friendly Card 192K/24bit HDADs sound excellent, much better than the CD. Eye in the Sky a bit less (the treble is a bit muffled in comparison with the others and there are a couple of annoying speed variations), but still worth buying.

The Gaucho DVD-A only has a photo gallery, lyrics and catalogue as extras.

I have the DVDA's of The Alan Parsons Project. Perfect stuff. Buy before they go out of print.

I have to agree with the others....the Classic HDAD is worth owning.

These are becoming very hard to find. All of the usual on-line retailers have been on back order for months (which tells me it's likely OOP).

I'm still looking for Turn of a Friendly Card....

Thanks for the feedback ...

Since I like extras, I will probably go with the DVD-A of Steely Dan ... thanks for the info.

As for Alan Parsons, someone just sold both I Robot & Turn Of A Friendly Card on eBay in a single auction for close to $150 I think ... remarkable what people can and will pay for a sonic journey.

Based on the reviews, however, I will continue to seek it out. I may buy the $10 2007 reissue CD, however, just to hear the Bonus Tracks. I also just learned that George Benson's "Breezin'" was available on DVD-A in 2002, but that too is now going for mega-bucks as it is also OOP.

I've asked this before, but does anyone know of a comparable site to this one for DVD-Audio? If not, I think one needs to be made.

Thanks again!

Dan

Not exactly, but you will find lots of great info on DVD-As (and SACDs, and much more) over at the QQ forums. Work that search engine hard!

BTW, I have the Gaucho DVD-A and the photos don't add much to the package. It is an OUTSTANDING album in surround, however.
