This is the classic forum argument - people can quote all the specs and maths they like. It's the ears that count. While, I agree there is much snake oil and ridicously priced exotic cables out there for the sucker market, it doesn't detract from what I've experienced with various interconnects and speaker cable - even my wife has noticed differences and that friends, is the proof in the pudding.

So fire away - I'm well shielded [grin]

I didnt mean to start a 'war' regarding the value of high end cables. My question was more in line of using what is branded a 'video' cable to carry the audio signals out of my Denon. Several folks have hinted that the PS3 might not be as great at SACD as my Denon, so now I am hesitant to move the Denon to the family room and go ahead and plug in some longer cables to the analog outs. Should I go this route, do any of you have experience with Audioquest cables, or should I look elsewhere? I was happy with them at 1m in length but there are so many boutique cable companies now, it becomes a bit daunting.

Sorry I went on that route and forgot the original question. I don't know what kind of "video" cables you're talking about, but all I know is that the DSD signal can only be carried through HDMI 1.2 or 1.3, and iLink (Firewire).
HDMI 1.1 will carry hi-rez PCM stereo signals at most.
And the rest only low rez.
If you can carry hi-rez and have a decent way of converting to analogue in a receiver or preamp or good DAC, go digital.
Otherwise analogue seems like the only solution.

I've read lots of posts in the meantime (on various boards) of PS3 owners find their console to perform better with SACD than their dedicated SACD player (including Denons). If you've got a receiver that can handle multichannel PCM (and perhaps even DSD) via HDMI then go for it. While we're on the topic of cables: just make sure your player isn't too far removed from your receiver. HDMI apparently is rather sensitive to jitter so you'll want to make sure that cable isn't too long. For more info have a look at http://www.ps3sacd.com/

Hello again deckerm,

I'm not quite clear what your two choices are. But I begin to suspect that you are thinking of running long cable from a source to an amp. If so, I think I'm on solid physics grounds* to think that that is not your best move (if I have completely misunderstood you, ignore the rest).

There are a couple of physical reasons for not putting a long wire 'upstream', i.e. from source to amp/pre-amp, or from pre-amp to amp. The first reason is that formula which I quoted earlier for calculating resistance/conductance: "long-narrow wire = BAD, short-thick wire = GOOD". The second reason is related to that conductance thing, namely the amount of current you are trying to get conducted: current is very low upstream, but more robust further downstream as it is pre-amped and power-amped. So it's safer to run relatively long cables from amp to speakers -- but the best bet between source and amps is the shortest possible.

*Fafnir: correct me where my limited understanding has led me astray....

The Opamps that drive your analogue outs are firly average. They will drive Low capacitence leads (which is what you should be looking for) easily over a few metres. The Effect over ten metre will be a gradual rolling off in the treble and possibly very deep bass. The Denon goes down a very long way so this is not problem.
You can always make your own using low less TV arial cable and be very suprised..

Indeed. Believes play a big role. Faith is very important in the higher realms of HiFi.
