Not that lossless will catch on nay more than SACD did (for music anyway), but are there any disadvantages with lossless PCM (or Dolby TrueHD or DTS-Master HD) over SACD?

As I understand things Dolby TrueHD uses MLP as a compression method (as in DVD-Audio). Personally I own both SACD and DVD-Audio and on both formats there are some excellent discs. If the mastering job was great, it will sound great on most formats. I own CD's that sound better than some of the SACD's I own.

Sorry, didn't mean to start a SACD vs DVD-A debate. If the encodign is the same, and Blu Ray players decode PCM lossless and DVD's, then technically (I guess) they should be able to play DVD-audio. No?

Yes, considering that the audio on BD and HD-DVD is so similar to DVD-Audio (based on multichannel hi-res PCM, basically) I'm surprised too that none of the new players support the format (yet). It may be more of a licensing/royalty issue than a technical matter really, although for companies like Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba etc. that should be easy to handle.
As for DSD vs PCM, see the FAQ: /faq#audio3

The FAQ needs to add that in the conversion of an analog signal to PCM, it starts off with a DSD type (1-bit) process and then in the conversion back from PCM to an analog signal a similar process to going from DSD to an analog signal goes on in sigma delta (1-bit) DAC. So why go through the complications of the extra processes of the PCM steps? I know that you can do the DAC step with resistive ladder DACs, but they are not up to doing this for anything more than the 16 bits/44.1kHz of RDCD.
I wonder if we are going to see in the future an interesting confluence of technologies on the large storage mediums now upon us whereby we have a DVD of a performance to go with a multichannel SACD of that performance (rather than Dolby 5.1) on the same disc?

This will happen the next few years with blu-ray I believe. Not with SACD or DSD multi-channel, but with hi-rez multi-channel PCM that I doubt you'd hear the difference with DSD (it is more a mastering matter). I am myself very eager to have all opera music on such a hi-rez video and audio disc.

Blu-ray already has some stellar live concerts using PCM high resolution (uncompressed or losslessly packed) 5.1 audio. I think that may be the future, at least for the executives making the decisions.
Blu-ray can do 8 channel 24/96 audio or 6 channel 24/192 audio, so it can best SA-CD and DVD-Audio if someone so chooses to release their discs that way.
There is no provision in Blu-ray or HD-DVD for DSD bitstreams, just high resolution PCM.
Multi-channel music only releases need not die if the record companies add "value added" 1080p video like nature shots or some other such HD video supplement to the HD formats. R&B Film's has thought along those lines with their Chronos IMAX release and Nature's Journey in 24/96 DTS Master Audio lossless (packed PCM).

Is the Blu-ray Chronos disk 24/96 DTS track in surround sound? Are there any players that can decode it?

The BD-P1400 Blu-ray player from Samsung is the only player on the market right now that will let you hear DTS-MA - it outputs it as bitstream to a compatible receiver.
