I have just been talking to a friend who went to Britian this summer and
she says the Virgin Megastore in Edinburg does not have any SACDs anymore.
The guy there said they had some a few years back but not anymore.
When I went to the Virgin records in Picadilly Circus in London in April
of last year, I noted that there were only a few SACDs and they were ones I
already had. There was very little to chose from and as I have feared the
situation seems to be getting worse. It used to be that in my home country,
I used to findthe odd SACD in most CD stores. I even decided not to buy
a few SACDs thinking that I would have a chance to pick them up later. Now,
I can't even find one or two in stores and they are usually the newly issued
Genesis or Depeche mode albums-and I can't find anything new in Jazz. Perhaps
the writing on the wall is obvious to some already, but it looks like even in
Europe, let alone countries in the Middle East, SACD purchases from music shops
are becoming next to impossible and that the only hope of geting SACDs lies in
purchases over the internet while supplies last. I might be generalising but
I have a feeling that this may be the situation elsewhere.

Except I purchased some items at Passionne Music, a little shop on Rue du Midi in Lausanne, Switzerland last summer, I gave up on "brick and mortar stores more than two years ago!

Since many SACDs are single inventory I doubt the accuracy of all this.

Given that selling CDs is no longer a growth industry, using Virgin's store inventory is not an accurate gauge of what's going.

So did I! You can hardly find SACDs in shops in France.

That's what I thought also.

Many classical departments have abandonned dedicated SACD sections and put the SACDs (now all hybrids, and many single inventory) among the CDs.

Concerning pop and jazz, many stores don't restock the SACD once it has been sold, especially when there is a newer CD reissue.

Even more depressing is that if you go to play.com's dedicated SA-CD pages, loads of them are "(temporarily) out of stock" including just about every one of their top 20 best-sellers.

Yes...I realise the inventory business...I have found however, that even
if the SACDs are put among the regular CDs, if you ask the salesperson to
check the inventory through the computer and put in SACD to see what comes up
the results in many CD stores show that they have had no new SACDs in for a while.
They have the old SACDs (Dark Side of the Moon, the first Norah Jones album etc).
However, I DID manage to snatch up the Good to Go-Go album from Spyro Gyra and the new
Meola album as SACD from the jazz section a few days ago. So I am not as depressed
about availability as I was when I started the thread, but I did pay dearly
for both SACDs. They definitely seem to be getting more expensive at least for
CDS coming from overseas.

I have stopped looking for SACDs in stores a long time ago. I would only search for discs which are OOP and rare. It's much more convenient and cheaper to order SACDs and CDs online.

The demise of the large inventory CD stores is inevitable, and the difficulty to find SACDs is just one symptom.

In FNAC's at Paris, classical SACD are widely available, among the CDs.
For example Alia Vox series.
