I know exactly what you mean. I too have some old box sets in my shelf that I've never really gotten into, and doubt if I ever will. Same thing with single disc releases whenever I've bought too many in a short time.
For this reason, and to keep my money spending in check, I started a new system this year: only one disc of new music per week (unless a single work is extended in two discs). I have perhaps a dozen new albums (unlistened) in the shelf, and every monday I choose which disc I mostly want to listen to that week. It requires some patience, but it feels like I'm actually getting more this way, and so far it has worked well, even with box sets - but only the ones I've bought after starting this system. For the older ones I have that weird psychological block just like what you described. The wonders of the human mind...

I went through a phase of believing that I had to have a recording of everything: that I was building a comprehensive library rather than a collection reflecting my own tastes and interests. It took me a while to realise that I didn't need a complete set of Glazunov's symphonies or Sor's guitar music (somebody will now tell me that I do). Even with favourite composers such as Martinu I don't need to be a completist: the one extraordinary record of his solo piano music that Firkusny made gives me more pleasure than the seven ordinary ones that Koukl made. I'm trying to revert to the kind of collecting I did when I was a teenager: buying a disc rarely, listening to it over and over again, and falling in love with it.

It's about four years since I've posted here - although I visit now and again to look at new releases, but I just had to come and say "Wow!". I have been rediscovering my collection, and I listened to your Respighi Roman Trilogy tonight. It was like being at the Royal Albert Hall. For me, this majestic disc encapsulates what SACD and multichannel are all about. :)

That was really very nicely said indeed, and I will, for sure, pass it on the the relevant persons, who put their work and talent into the making of this.

Thanks for posting!

My pleasure. Must get around to buying some more of Ronald Bratuigam's Beethoven.

Would love to see the new BIS SACD's here on SACD_net but, alas, they do not show up yet. Robert, perhaps you could list a little capsule summary right here.

Dear Robert,

It's nice to see M. Huss and Co. back in the list, but could we possibly get some more Haydn symphonies, particularly the sturm und drang works on which the band prides itself? Thanks, as always,

Bill

Norman Lebrecht has posted on his blog that BIS has finally cancelled recording of the next two Sebelius symphonies scheduled with the Minnesota Orchestra---now almost a year on lock-out. What a shame that two great bands like the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra should just about be wiped out by cultural indifference. It's certainly a loss to the Twin Cities, and to all of us.
