I read your review--your words weigh so heavily toward how great the engineering is that I feel you're in love with the engineering aspects of the recording over the quality of the performances themselves. The novelty of the recording techniques seem to come very clearly through your review--too much I feel.

in other words you haven't actually listened to the performances, but think i over-rate them even though you haven't heard them yourself.
well, that makes sense, doesn't it?!
by all means disagree with my judgement of the performances if you've heard them yourself. otherwise you have absolutely no basis whatever on which to pass such a judgement.
and by the way, i DO make it very clear (giving both general comments and specific examples - i could give many more) why i think these are excellent PERFORMANCES per se, regardless of the engineering.
fafnir appears to agree with me. do you think (without of course having listened to the disc yourself) that he is wrong too?

Thanks terence and fafnir for your excellent and helpful reviews of this disc and its predecessor. Although I'm still not surround, I've been convinced enough by your opinions of the performances to dip my toe in the water.

well, I for one am looking forward to this disc, assuming it's release in the UK. I very much enjoyed the 7 & 8 and Terence and fafnir's reviews indicate that my high expectations of this one will be met.
By the way, I find it disturbing that Terence's excellent and comprehensive review was found to be helpful by only 6 / 9 people. I assume that the 3 who didn't find it helpful have never heard either of the Beethoven discs and probably have an antipathy towards Tacet. Such opinions should have no bearing whatsoever on the judgement of whether a review is helpful or not. Just one more reason to get rid of the very unhelpful "review the reviewer" system.

Out of 9 paragraphs in terence review, I find one (!) to be devoted to music. I find the other 8 at best being related to music, almost solely committed to sound quality. What’s the point in writing reviews of recorded classical music if you don’t have higher ambition in giving impressions of the music performed? Well-I’d guess the simple answer is you're more interested in sound than music, that many here want to read about it. Of course there’s nothing wrong with that, but...
I mean some are interested in garages, other care for the car inside the garage, and one or two will even be interested in where the car takes you. terence seems to be happy to talk about the huge garage and about making it. Well-I’m not. I’m much more interested in what type of car it is, how it handles and where it takes you. And I will appreciate a passionate and entertaining way of telling it. That’s my criteria when pressing the button.
Brenda – I find your logic in explaining the need to get rid of the unhelpful button pressers preposterously funny!

the reason why i devote a lot of space to HOW this disc is recorded is because TACET handle multichannel recording in SUCH a different way to other companies. people need to be aware of this before they purchase, and i felt i had to describe it properly.
your point about a keen interest in sound quality being somehow questionable is an odd one. OF COURSE i'm very interested in sound quality, as i assume are the majority of people who read a website devoted to the highest quality sound carrier (SACD) currently available commercially to the public.
if we WEREN'T interested in sound as a special feature of the recorded product, then we wouldn't be wasting time on SA-CD.net comparing notes on discs that we have purchased.
it (almost) goes without saying that a poor, uninteresting performance remains poor and uninteresting no matter how good the sound is. in fact the fidelity of good SACD sound may even make its mediocrity sound worse than on the RBCD layer. i own a number of SACDs which would fall into that category.
and re. this particular disc, can i simply repeat myself unequivocally - interpretatively these are in my opinion EXCELLENT performances in themselves, very greatly enhanced by andreas spreer's outstanding and imaginative engineering.

Tommy, are you saying that Terence's review was unhelpful? Or do you just not like the style?
I ask because I get a strong impression that it's the latter rather than former.
