This Abbado/BPO recording was made in the early 90's (using DG's "4D" technology) and released on a single CD in 1993.
Does anyone know why DG chose this for SACD release (instead of Abbado´s later Mahler recordings (for example his 9th made in 2001) and why it doesn't fit on a single SACD? The CD is 69 minutes long.

I think the release policy of the labels is a bigger mystery than shown in any X-Files episode:-). By the way the mastertape quality is only 24/44! This is also true for the Mahler/Boulez release. I was ready to purchase both but decided to put them back into the bin.

Wilfried,
Which Boulez Mahler release are you referring to, Symphony 3 or 4?
The booklet with No.3 claims 48kHz/24 Bit PCM.

It certainly seems like they are not really trying to release their best sounding mastertapes as SACDs when they release old 44khz material instead of high res masters or, why not,good old analogue masters.
DGG have in their vaults,a fantastic recording of the Mahler 4th with Karajan and his Berliners on top form.
Both as an interpretation and recording it is still better than anything so far released on either RBCD or SACD!!!
And as far as the fifth goes, Barbirolli and the Philarmonia are at the top of my list both for sound and interpretation also on LPs of course.

For me it's Karajan/BPO on the 5th as well

I agree with you regarding the playing and interpretation, but the recording quality is not quite up there with the 4th IMO.
The same goes for the sixth and the analogue ninth.Fantastic playing,but rather synthetic recordings that don't quite cope with the massive fortissimos as one would wish.But maybe there is more on those masters than what has been transferred onto the original LPs?

Based on Ramesh's review, I would think this were a stereo only SACD, but the cover art clearly shows the "SURROUND" logo on the lower left. Can we clarify this? I'd like to know how this sounds in Surround, if it was indeed released as such.

It is a multichannel release, which was why it spread onto 2 discs. I reviewed only the stereo version, because although I have a universal player, my lounge is too small for a multichannel setup

DG seems to only reissue recordings that can be remixed to surround sound (the exception being Karajan's 60s Beethoven cycle).
His later recordings, the 3rd, 7th, and 9th, are all live recordings, with the 3rd recorded originally for radio. Because of this, probably none of them can be remixed to 5.1, which is why DG decided not to release them.
