Your Sony car SACD player plays DVD-A? In PCM? That would be a first for Sony, except if it plays the DVD-Video-compatible 2.0 PCM stream. Or did you mean PCM 5.1?

I can confirm that it plays PCM Stereo stream. I havn't tried PCM 5.1, but I don't see why it wouldn't. From what I am seeing, this new "x-dsp" engine is probably some chip developed to try and market inexpensive gear covering all bases. I would surmise then once people start buying more of anything, like chips with higher quality specs will come out.

Anyone have a suggestion of a dvd-a with PCM 5.1? (Something I would like to own... classical, jazz, early high phonic rock)

May I suggest the 'Love' album by The Beatles?

The album was released in two versions — a standard CD version and a two-disc CD and DVD-Audio package. The DVD-Audio disc contains a 5.1-channel surround sound mix (96 kHz 24-bit MLP), downmixable to 2-channel. For backwards compatibility it also contains separate audio-only DVD-Video content with 2-channel stereo (48 kHz 16-bit PCM) and 5.1-channel surround (448 kbps Dolby Digital and 754 kbps DTS).

> I haven't tried PCM 5.1, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

Because Sony (and Philips) simpy does not support DVD-Audio.

Funny you should mention that one. It is a perfect choice. One of my friends is a sound designer for that show. Don't know why he didn't mention the DVD...

I will let you know how it goes.

Welp, heres the scoop:

As you state, Sony will not access the DVD-A Audio layer. It will on the other hand access pretty much everything else. Sony Xplod online manual has a section which state which layers it won't access.

Actually seems a little silly to me. Maybe with a firmware change in the future, or they may be setting up for more models. It does do the PCM stereo layer at the higher resolution though. Both the Love DVD-A and 2 Depeche Mode DVD-A's prove that.

After futzing around with about a dozen DVD players (commercial or consumer) and finding 1 that played the PCM DVD-A layer, I stand firm in my opinion. DVD-A is a dead format. Once we (recording companies) start producing more surround material, HD or Blu-ray wars will be settled which means top end master sampling to the consumer anyhow.

...Now that this unit has been out for a while - I would really like to hear more about how this unit is working out in your car...????

...I'm considering the purchase of one of these units (MEX-DV200) and would like to hear more reviews in detail about the overall sound quality, how it sounds "down-mixed" into 2-chan. stereo???...If anyone has actually used a "center channel speaker"..etc...

I know it won't play 'DVD-A' - that is fine - Personally, I don't care about that, nor would I have ever expected Sony to support it....

I think the center-channel issue is my biggest concern...Thanks in advance for sharing any information on your experience with this unit...

I actually started with a half din (Clarion now Pyle) in the dash. Worked and I could tell that it was holding the system back. Had a custom install done last week moving the radio up high, the A/C system just below and an Infinity beta mid bass driver and tweeter installed where the ashtray had been (2002 Lincoln LSE). That was the way to go.

Many of the discs (Classical almost always) out there are actually full range all around. By doing this I have total sonic balance as things shift if designed so. Staging is perfect, at least in the sense I am sitting a little left of center.

Down mixing works fine, but it is fairly obvious that it is not meant to be that way. Then again, having heard the real mix, it may just be me saying that doesn't sound as good.

Performance has been great, just one quirk once where I had to reset the deck. (Reset button behind face) Dont know why, but I think it was I slipped when grabbing a disc out, it tried to retract it, but I pulled it out anyhow. If I would have let it function correctly probably would have been ok.

Two thumbs up, and go for it. Don't think you will be dissapointed.

Here is a somewhat flattering review(at least for the SACD part)

I don't mean to sound gloomy but there appeared to be no new SACD car unit among Sony's 2008 CES announcements.
