I just got burgled.
I loved my old XPlod, and my first AIWA, the coolest feature was the remote that mounted on the steering wheel.

Now I want a head unit capable of playing DVD audio, and 5.1 is a killer feature.

My question is this - Is the Sony the best or only unitwith DVD audio? I couldn't care less about video.

I have a 94 Z28 LT1. It came with a Bose system, but the previous owner butchered the harness, and disposed of the 5th speaker.

I'm told it was an 8" sub, but it looks more like a 6x9 .

What could I put there for a sub?

I don't care for t he bump bump stuff, I prefer clarity, with rich bass.

Any suggestions?

I don't think it does DVD-A, only DVD-V. It would be a first if Sony did DVD-A.

PS Sorry to hear you got burgled.

I have the MEX-DV2000 installed in my PT Cruiser. The four channel amp is run directly to my four OEM speakers. With the bass set up to +8 and everything else set to flat the sound is superb!!!!

I drove to work playing the SACD of Goucho with a huge smile on my face. Too bad all multi-channel disks don't sound this good.

Great to hear your DV2000 is working out so well...

Where did you purchase your unit and if you don't mind posting it, how much did it cost you?

If these units really are a good deal - and enough people buy them - it very likely could help the SACD cause...

It took me a while, but I found center channel speakers with amps and bought one. You can choose either 1/2-DIN, 1 DIN or dashtop models.

My MEX-DV2000 will be set up like this:

1) Clarion SRK5 - 1/2 DIN center channel speaker
2) Sony MX-1S - "slim" series monoblock for under-the-seat in my Durango
3) An Infinity REF1220SE (I'm hoping this will be more accurate and less "boom")

Here's my current list of center channel speakers - they can be difficult to find on their company websites.

Car Center Channel speakers (updated 7/1/2007)

1) Clarion SRK5 - 1/2 DIN - with its own amplifier.

2) Kenwood KSC-510CTR (dashtop speaker with amplifier)

3) The Clarion 1/2 DIN unit seems to be identical to the Pyle PLVWCRK5 (also speaker and amplifier)

4) Pioneer TS-CX7 dashtop speaker ; no amplifier

I've actually bought two of these (dropped one) and heard one at a store that was set up for 5.1 sound - quite a nice sounding little speaker.

5) Alpine SBS-05DC - 1 DIN in-dash speaker; no amplifier. A dealer I visited had one with a center channel amp given only to dealers (dumb)

Hi Wayne -

It seems like you've really done your homework here...So please post your thoughts on how the MEX-DV2000 is performing in your system...(I would guess you have had it up and running for about a couple weeks by-now???)

Anyone else that has any feedback or reviews of this unit's performance & overall features would be appreciated..!!!

Sony has issued a press release concerning the third car SA-CD player in their range, the XAV-W1 -- a double-DIN A/V system with a WVGA screen (SRP $800)

If anyone was wondering when this unit will be available - I found this on the Sony web site:

"The XAV-W1 car video system featuring SA-CD audio will be available in August for about $800."

That's pretty cool - because August is tomorrow...Yeah!!!

Installed in my 2002 Lincoln LSE. Pulled Factory Alpine 5.1 DSP unit. Maintained factory speakers for now, but put the Pyle (which by the way is the Clarion via China manufacturer) 1/2 din in the Lincoln kit pocket to assist the two factory 2 inchers.

Facts:

Plays DVD-A in PCM, Dolby 5.1 and DTS

Has Two SACD modes - HQ is au naturale and is absolutely phenom
- STD actually down converts to 44.1 24 bit and then allows any and all
processing. Still Sounds great... but many nuances are lost.

Has front and rear video outs

Bass Management? It don't need no stinking bass management! ;) Seriously, Overtuere on the Phantom of the Opera CD reproduces "nickel" hz bass pipes sounding loud (easily 110db L. F. E. on a factory amp yet) and clear on two 6x8 woofers. Why would you need to change the bass? If you do, you subwoofer system is ill designed.

Subwoofer plays on all sources Multi channel or not.

Unit is strongly built and easy to use, albeit the many menus. You can do everything from the display, but the a video Monitor makes it even easier.

My gripes -
Time alignment should have been left in HQ SACD mode. I see why it was not, since that is all handled by the lower quality PCM X-DSP unit and they hit a price point. Still if you want it, you can use it in the processed mode. I have found that the source really dictates what to do. If it is a good quality center obvious recording then no way no how. The DSP seems to take that information and fuddles it into L-R. Sounds off phase. On the other hand L-R heavy remasters with a smidge of center seem to do better in aligned mode. In a properly design car, time alignment is invaluable. What do you think you are doing in your home listening room with speaker placement? I was designing award winning audiophile reference systems back in the early 90's when Sony first brought time alignment out while many competitors still fuddled with all manner of l-r summing schemes! I digress though...

Unit shuts off high pass and low pass filters with the SACD. Again a function of the DSP processor. Not a huge issue, but you will need to account for that externally now.

I paid 199.95 for mine through an Ebay auction. It probably won't see US stores for some time - most retailers won't have a clue of the potential. Maybe you will find a small indy to order it for you. Mine did come with the U.S warranty though, so all is good.

At any price, don't know why anyone would buy another unit unless you went with a given manufacturers top end networked system.

Your Sony car SACD player plays DVD-A? In PCM? That would be a first for Sony, except if it plays the DVD-Video-compatible 2.0 PCM stream. Or did you mean PCM 5.1?
