does anybody know whether repeats are made in these recordings?
i'm trying to decide between this set and the recently released pentatone/storioni, and am assuming that first movement repeats must be chopped from the storioni to make it fit on one disc only.

There are a lot of places to remove repeats, such as the 2nd movement of the B-flat, and the 3rd movement of the E-flat.

yes, it's which ones are cut that i want to know about. especially in the case of the storioni, as it's on one disc only.

From memory, all repeats are made in this recording. Don't know the Storioni recording to compare between them.

i've got this - no. 1 is excellent but i felt that the first two movements of no. 2 were too slow. i am used to the old beaux arts recodings and the famous march/slow movement from no.2 seems to drag a bit at the haydn trios tempo - but that may be just because i'm used to the faster beaux arts.
the recording is excellent

with respect to the Storioni album I can clarify that the repeats of first and second movement of opus 99 and the first movement of opus 100 are deleted, but not the repeats of the third movement of both works (in consultation between the artists and the producer, taking into account the added value of inclusion on the one hand and the higher price of a double SA-CD on the other hand)

Dear Poly,
I enjoyed your review of the Storioni version so much I am moving some of your words over to this title's thread:
"the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt fully capture the inherent contradictions of Schubert’s writing whereas the Storioni Trio, if one where to exaggerate unkindly, treat these trios as glorified salon music".
The Eisenstadt Gang are my favourite also, and I don't have a problem with "two discs for the price of one". With Verklärte Nacht and Smetana's kvartetti dealt with, these are my evening listening now.
I don't have the Storioni Schubert, but I have their Beethoven. 'Salon music' might be too unkind, 'workmanlike' might describe their work (faint praise either way). --But surely they are not as comatose as the Guarneri Trio?

Yes, perhaps I was being harsh - although I must say I meant to be harsh as the playing is simply too perfumed for such powerful music. The Storioni Trio are far from comatose, they just don't trouble the soul in the same way. I don't know the Guarneri Trio disc and from what you say, nor do I wish to!

The two perfomances have such different approaches; such great music can stand them, I hope. I have both recordings, and enjoy both very much.
