Discussion: Chick Corea: Rendezvous in New York

Post by Julien April 4, 2007 (1 of 7)
One of my best jazz SACDs! And I believe, one of Chick Corea's best.

This recording is a collection of very entertaining standards (Blue Monk, Automn Leaves, Concerto de Aranjuez, Coltrane's Bessie's Blues...), performed by some of the great improvisers of our times.

Since it is not mentionned above, I feel obliged to list some of the other performers:

Bobby McFerrin (the 3 first titles of the SACD, any McFerrin fan here still sad of him not being on SACD?), Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Gary Burton, John Patitucci, Avishai Cohen, Jeff Ballard, Steve Wilson, Tim Garland, Gonzalo Rubalcaba...

This set contains a lot of my favorite jazz, and the recording quality is fantastic. No, perfect.
Jazz lovers, prepare your credit card! Claude?

Hi Julien,

I'm not a huge Chick Corea fan (I have some of his ECM albums), but I was actually intending to get some of the complete concerts from the 60th anniversary celebration on DVD, rather than this compilation on SACD. There is a 10 DVD set and the concerts are available seperately. The most interesting for me are 2 and 9, and I hope that the DVD sound comes close to the SACD.

Disc 1: CHICK COREA & BOBBY MCFERRIN DUET
Disc 2: NOW HE SINGS, NOW HE SOBS TRIO (w. Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes)
Disc 3: REMEMBERING BUD POWELL BAND
Disc 4: CHICK COREA & GARY BURTON DUET
Disc 5: CHICK COREA AKOUSTIC BAND
Disc 6: CHICK COREA & ORIGIN
Disc 7: CHICK COREA & GONZALO RUBALCABA DUET
Disc 8: CHICK COREA NEW TRIO
Disc 9: THREE QUARTETS BAND (w. Michael Brecker)
Disc 10: RENDEZVOUS IN NEW YORK: THE MOVIE

There is a nice seven page interview with Chick Corea in issue 49 of http://hifiplus.com/.

To relate to Beagle's thread "Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Bartók" (/showthread/18963/18964/y#18964), here is what Chick says about Bartók:

Interviewer (AKB): But this not the norm! Normally, when you start playing piano, you play Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn!

Chick Corea: That maybe true for the classical pianist. But for jazz musicians in New York, it is more natural to listen to Bartók and Stravinsky. These are the interesting composers for us. Then, if you are going deeper, you'll want to listen to the other, earlier composers. My interest in Mozart began late really, in 1982, with my meeting with Friedrich Gulda, the well-known Austrian pianist.

I've been listening to a lot of jazz recently, and this is by far the best sounding jazz recording I own. And the second disc is, musically speaking, a mind blow. I have never been a huge Chick Corea fan, but this recording is convincing me. Everytime I listen to this second disc I'm there thinking, how can it possibly be that good ?
Oh my.

Dear Saurabh,

I am with you and I am aware of amazon.fr returns policy, but despite that matter of fact I am very unhappy to hear about this attitude to your customers...

Allow me to explain something. I’ve got plenty of „not yet unwrapped“ CD/SACDs, because of lack of my time. After receiving parcels with CD/SACDs I am OK with seeing “not damaged boxes & all the items in the parcel”...

By the way, I’ve been writing articles/tests for the magazine Stereo & Video (Czech) - I can send you a copy of any of them to be able to better understand the reason I am buying SACDs - testing HI-FI and High End equipment and "Rendezvous in New York by Chick Corea" is wonderful piece of sound right on the stage; so called LIFE…

Anyway my SACD coming from that set bought via Amazon.fr is definitely defective item, there’s no doubt about it, so, what am I to do? Shall I start to write an article with headline sounds something like: “Don’t Be a Naughty Boy and Listen to Your CDs within 30 Days!” or “30 DAYS FOR YOUR LISTENING TO”, well, who knows...

Saurabh, you and colleagues of yours, you are kindly requested to do slightly more than the last, please.

Thank you in anticipation

Antonin Broz (tobro@chello.cz)

Antonin,

Sorry to read about your problem, but are you certain that the SACD is defective? Have you tried it on more than one player?

I have several SACDs which have drop outs when played on my Sony SCD-XA777ES, but it's the (well known) fault of the player.

Dear Claude, unfortunately, I am...

I am professional test writer (magazine Stereo & Video in Czechia) and I've got Sony SCD-XA1200ES (CD/SACD) and Sony DVP-NS9100ES (DVD-V/CD/SACD) and Denon DVD-2200 (DVD-A/DVD-V/CD/SACD) players… Don't worry I know what I am writing about…, read my correspondence with amazon.fr once again, please, there’s a defective disc no doubt about it. Yes, I know, it’s too long and not too exciting :-)

Well, in my humble opinion that particular SACD disc wasn’t pressed correctly in the shop or it's got 'bad layer(s)' on its surface and laser cannot focus properly... and of course it can happen that’s all.

The point I am talking about is the ‘amazon.fr attitude’ to the customer…

So, take care Claude, and have many splendid music experiences!

Bst rgds tobro :-)
