Discussion: Eybler: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 - Hofstetter

I've had this disc for sometime and true to Madisonears' assessment, it doesn't get played much (on the other hand neither do some that I know are definitely worthy of repetitious play). So until I found myself humming some of the tunes (much to my wife's distress), I would have said Madisonears' review was spot on. But since I find some of these passages going round in my head months after playing the thing, I want to suggest that there may be more to it than Madisonears allows. Note that I said "may be more", I personally, after all that, cannot say I am not 100% sure.

I guess that I am saying my appreciation of Eybler came not while listening, but after the fact as I remembered listening! Strange!

Here I reply to my own posting. After listening to this over again, I have to say while the sound is very nice there are long empty reaches between those charming passages I alluded to. Moreover some may listen to this and say "what charming passages?" I would not have a ready answer. They are sort of marginal. It would have been ever so much nicer had CPO recorded, say, Arriaga instead.
