I believe by default a lot of audio output from PS3 happens at 48 kHz instead of 44.1 kHz, and then upsampling is likely not applied. You may find more info at http://www.ps3sacd.com (in the FAQ).

Thank you for your reply. I checked at PS3SACD.com and found useful information but not exactly the answer at my question. I also believe, like you said, that a lot in the PS3 happens at 48Khz. If that's the truth is a real pity that they give the opportunity to stream files from a server or from the internal HD and then you cannot take advantage of all the features available. It shouldn't be difficult for them to implement it I think.

Anyone able to give other useful informations on how audio from internal HD or streaming is processed in the PS3 is welcomed.

I will check with some MP3's and WMA files I have on HD of the PS3 as soon as I can - later on today or tomorrow.

My MP3's are ripped at 320kps. I will try various settings on the PS3 and see what my receiver tells me!

By the way, I never use the 44.1/88.2/176.4 setting on the PS3, i.e. automatic upsampling. Reason is, my receiver cannot apply room correction processign at 176.4. Also, I do not like the upsamplign of the PS3 anyway.

Thank you for your effort. I'll wait eagerly your outcomes.

I do not know exactly what the Ps3 does with upsampling and bitmapping but in my setup I am very pleased with the results. Maybe the dacs in my receiver (I also tried a soundcard - EMU 0404 USB - with outstanding results) work better with a higher sample rate.

Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a PS3 pretty soon, and am unsure which to get. I know that the 40GB model does not include SACD playback. Would it be worth it to spend more and get SACD playback in the 80GB model? I currently have an Oppo 980 which I am very happy with as an SACD player and wouldn't get rid of because it does several things the PS3 doesn't.

Any suggestions either way? Thanks!

Hi --

I'm glad to have both as SA-CD players. I have the same Oppo you do, like it very much, and opted for the 80GB PS3 that plays SA-CDs. I've been using the PS3 more and more as a primary player for SA-CDs. I'm happy to have multiple SA-CD players, in case one needs service, or if I want to add the capability to another room in the future. I think both players sound great with SA-CDs, multichannel and stereo. The PS3 has several "visualizations" which play on your TV screen while the music is playing, as opposed to the Oppo's simple but useful information screen. I know, I know, it's all about the music, but darn it, I like to see images of the earth from outer space when I'm listening to, say, Also sprach Zarathustra :-).

I've just got the 60gb model. I'm still playing with it but very impressed so far.
One point which took me by surprise is the noise it makes. This has been touched on before in this thread I believe.Perched on the top of my open tower of equipment, it sounds like a lawmnmower going at full speed! However salvation was at hand by using it vertically which it is also designed to do. This drops the clatter down by about 90%-the rest I reduced by placing on rubber pucks and repositioning in another shelf with some books around for isolation while leaving plenty of space at the rear. You can still hear it softly during breaks in the music, but now the sound level is acceptable to me.

Some tips on how to make it more silent here: http://homepage3.nifty.com/kanaimaru/PS3/0f.htm (an English page on a Japanese site). Click on "Sound Tuning of the Sony PS3 console" and then proceed to 'Intro', 'Bottom', 'Left' and 'Top'.

It's a pity the 40GB unit doesn't support SACD because apparently it's less noisy (thanks to lower power dissipation, caused by more efficient chips). Let's hope the next PS3 model will be a silent one with the latest silicon *and* SACD.

Well I tried it and the receiver is telling me 48kHz. In the Music Settings menu, the output frequency is only selectable for CD playback, not MP3 playback. However, if the ouput is 48kHz (presumably at 16-bit depth), then there is some up-sampling going on anyway on a 320kbps MP3 file??

Thanks,Seventh Taylor. I had checked that out that but on my reading the article was about sticking some unnamed tape to the shell to improve its sound quality, not about reducing its sound level although of course,it may assist. I will bear it in mind. Just about to down load the latest software today-the one with the special superbit mapping for sacd.My display left the day my PS3 arrived so only be able to upgrade now. Interested to see what improvements it offers.
