I thought I was "Mahlered Out" wasn't sure I was going to buy this disc. Sure am glad I didn't make that mistake! This is really something else. A stupendously great recording in every way. There is unprecedented clarity, depth, breadth and weight to the multi-channel sound. I sure hope it receives the audience it deserves - should be on everyone's shelf and listened to frequently. As Castor makes evident in his review, this great recording is not wasted on a so-so performance. The performance is extraordinarily compelling. One is involved deeply from the opening bars. Is that because the sound is so good or because the conductor and orchestra are so involved that you can't help but be caught up in it? I think both are operating here to create an extraordinary experience.

Told you so didn´t I? I never got around to writing a review but Classics Today did and Hurwitz came to the same conclusion you and I did. Stunning!
So did Gramophone. I said in my original post, this recording is a model of its kind!
My next SACD set will be their Mahler sixth.I´m less than a hundred percent happy with my Zander Telarc set which is quite good but a bit synthetic and overmiked.
All the best Chris

Not to mention very fragmented treatment of the music by Zander himself - not a conductor content to let the music speak for itself in anyway.

I really want a great 2nd to go along with Chailly's 3rd and 9th as well as Tilson-Thomas' 4th. So, Fischer isn't planning more, huh? Too bad.

I have the Chailly M3 & M9 in SACD, both are outstanding, I also have the Chailly M2 in RCBD this one is probably the most boring M2 in my collection with a sound to match.

You mean that you heard Mahler's 5th by the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Ivan Fischer ?
I think Channel Classics lets the orchestra perform a piece several times (during foreign tours etc.) and records the work immediately afterwards (avoiding extra rehearsals merely for the recording)

BTW, where did you attend this concert?

Yes, there were 3 performances in September with Fischer and the BFO, in the Palace of Arts, Budapest. I hope Channel didn't miss the opportunity to record this extraordinary performance. It surely ranks top among the fifths I have in my collection.

Ivan fischer does not wish to record 'sets' because he would be obligated to perform works he feels he is not ready to do or just does not like. Plus this limits the other great works out there to be recorded.
In late January we will be releasing "Joseph Legende' from Richard Strauss. this is ballet music that is very rarely performed let alone recorded. (we are looking into a Mahler 4 which they tour next year....)

Concerning the reviews coming in. It is great to read the positive reactions to the M2 and seeing the 'buzz' going around from many countries as to the performance and sound. I still get shivers going down my back every time I listen which between the recording, editing, and mastering are a good number of times!
thanks for your support. Jared

This is the only reasonable way to go. For some reason, I tend to like to collect "sets", but it's much more intelligent for Ivan Fischer to resist making them when the music either isn't to his taste or he is not yet confident in his interpretation. I salute Mr. Sacks and his Channel Classics team for the truly wonderful recording of the Mahler 2nd and look forward to whatever Mr Fischer wants to record. I do hope however, that the Dvorak 7th is one of those pieces he likes and feels confident about - and that he will want to record it in the not too distant future!

Dear windsurfer,

A good number of people have asked for a Dvorak 7th. Ivan knows this and will program it into his touring repertoire for the Orchestra so I also hope it will happen. In the meantime, the mahler 2nd keeps on getting great reviews. Our mahler 6th has been nominated for a Grammy, but there is stiff competition from some fine releases.

Greetings

Jared Sacks

Not according to Channel Classic's site. Channel's SA-CDs sell for much the same as a full-price CD here so the issue is moot.
