I thought I was "Mahlered Out" wasn't sure I was going to buy this disc. Sure am glad I didn't make that mistake! This is really something else. A stupendously great recording in every way. There is unprecedented clarity, depth, breadth and weight to the multi-channel sound. I sure hope it receives the audience it deserves - should be on everyone's shelf and listened to frequently. As Castor makes evident in his review, this great recording is not wasted on a so-so performance. The performance is extraordinarily compelling. One is involved deeply from the opening bars. Is that because the sound is so good or because the conductor and orchestra are so involved that you can't help but be caught up in it? I think both are operating here to create an extraordinary experience.

I listened to this yesterday. WOW! It is a great performance and recording. I love how the low end is captured - it gives great weight and palpability to the recording. This now ranks as the best 2nd I have which incudes MTT, Slatkin/Telarc, Neumann/Canyon, Mehta/London Kubelik/DG and Litton/Delos.

I need to get this recording, I have been on an endless search for the ideal M2 but so far none have come close, and I have almost every modern recording. I am a bit surprised that you considered Slatkin/Telarc one of the better ones, to me this recording has been a great disappointment, the sound is not your typical Telarc, Slatkin and friends are so choked in emotion that they are completely unable to function, hopelessly slow, this peromance clearly demostrates that Slatkin has not yet discoverd Mahler.

You misunderstood my post. The Slatkin/Telarc is one of a number of recordings I have in my collection but I did not mean to imply it was a great performance. I DO like the sound of that recording though. Of the one's I have, I would put the Mehta in second place behind Fischer/Channel in terms of perfromance. I've not heard any Bersntein performance so that is a gaping hole in my collection I suppose.

I have the Bernstein M2 on DG, the recording is problematic, it is a cut and paste job from several live performances, loud with dry acoustics, the performance is not bad if you are willing to go along with Bernsteins conducting style. I hear that his earlier recording, recorded in a cathedral acoustics, is the better version.

If you have surround possibilities I would recommend the DVD version of Mahler 2 with Bernstein. I would recommend it even if you have stereo only.

Are the 2 Fischer - Mahler SACDs part of a project to record all the Mahler Symphonies ?
I'm hesitating to buy Mahler's 5th by MTT (some contradictory reviews on the web) and was wondering if we could expect a Mahler's 5th by Fischer in the near future.

I don't think that a full cycle is planned. However, I attended a performance of the 5th this September, and it was truly exceptional, even though I'm not sure that a recording was made...

You mean that you heard Mahler's 5th by the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Ivan Fischer ?
I think Channel Classics lets the orchestra perform a piece several times (during foreign tours etc.) and records the work immediately afterwards (avoiding extra rehearsals merely for the recording)
BTW, where did you attend this concert?
