I think many here would want a collection of Varese on SACD newly recorded in DSD or perhaps even DXD? Now THAT would be a collection to have. I wonder if Chailly has any plans to do this?

I enjoyed Eschenbach/Paris Orchestra with Dalbavie's "Color" and was hoping Philadelphia might record some modern pieces, such as Varèse, in Verizon Hall. Since Eschenbach/Philadelphia are out, how about Franz Welser-Möst with the Cleveland Orchestra?

And I'd like to state my preference for the sound of the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium for recordings. At least, to me, its wonderful for Berlioz and Debussy. Realizing that Severance Hall must be a gem for a live performance, I hope maestro Welser-Möst considers both venues for possible recordings.

Oh yes please! One of my earliest intense musical memories is of Poème electronique, written on some of the first synthesisers, for a virtual forest of speakers at the 1958 Brussels World Fair. It was not long after the soul-destroying ravages of WWII, and yet before Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis -- but Varese wrote the soundtrack for it all. Post-war europe produced little that can compare.

I used to own the LP with P. electronique, Integrales, Ionisation, Octandre & Density 21.5. The extreme stereo definition used to freak the cats -- and me too.

"Poème électronique" at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Po%C3%A8me_%C3%A9lectronique
It includes a link to a sound file, but it didn't work for me.

This would have been a highly interesting recording for Philips to use for promotion of SACD, 50 years after the Philips pavillion at the Brussels fair. They have actually used it on various occasions (referring to the show as 'multimedia avant la lettre') but not in combination with SACD. Unfortunately Philips doesn't seem too active anymore in pushing SACD.

It's a QuickTime movie file, sound only.

Poème electronique was recorded on 3-track I believe, but a special control tape was used to dynamically pan those 3 channels across 400 loudspeakers...It would be interesting to translate that into 5.1. I'm not sure that would be possible, but it would help to experience the piece (somewhat) as intended.

I'm not that big of a fan of Poème electronique, however. I'd really like to hear Ionization or Ecuatorial on SACD.

Varese would be nice, but how about Hymnen and Repons in multi-channel? These are two of very few compositions I know of that were intended by the composer to be heard with sound coming at the listener from more than two directions. DG no longer owns the masters of Hymnen, I believe, as Stockhausen has issued his own very expensive redbook version personally. Repons is probably still in the DG catalog on redbook, and a multi channel mix of that and Shadow Double wouldn't be too costly to prepare. Of course, it won't sell as well as his Mahlers.
