That wouldn't explain the removal of the sound effects (which, IMHO added much to the enjoyment of this set on vinyl). Perhaps these sound effects would have interfered with the creation of a plausible MC recording by the way they were originally taped. If these have been removed from the stereo segment as well, then, I suppose, I'll just keep on playing the records and refrain from a new expenditure.

Yes, they are missing in the stereo version. Much as I think this is the best this recording has ever sounded and it is terrific. I am appalled that the cannons and the gun shots are missing they are integral part of the drama and the score. Perhaps Pentatone would like to comment.

Indeed, artistically this recording of Tosca is among the top recomendations. And now, we must wait for the next Pentatone opera releases: any more titles planned ?
best regards,
Oscar.

not quite sure what castor, in his excellent review, means by the following?

"This recording represents a departure from Pentatone’s usual RQR series in that the original 8-channel tapes have been used to produce, for the first time, a multi-channel mix".

A quote from the booklet may help.

" At the time the recording team decided to use eight channels instead of the usual four, the reason being the balance between singers and orchestra in an opera - which is highly critical - and the sound effects - which are often used in operas, whether or not they are indicated in the score. In order to guarantee both a perfect stereo and multi-channel mix, the recording technicians chose to record the voices and the sound effects on four extra channels."

As I have indicated in my review, I do wish that Pentatone had used the sound effects track, but this should not detract too much from an overall excellent achievement.

as i recall the davis/vickers/philips peter grimes was roughly contemporaneous with this tosca.

now, even if it wasn't a quad recording as such, if it were 8-channel would that enable pentatone to do a multichannel remix on it i wonder?

i suppose if it wasn't quad originally it would strictly speaking go beyond the remit of the RQR series. but it's a fabulous recording, and it would be great to hear it in MC format....

Could someone at PentaTone please explain why the sound effects were removed from this recording. Did you forget them? Maybe you could do with an artistic advisor.

I noticed some aspect of resonant high pitch ringing when voices are going to the top while listening with my AKG K1000 headphones. I'm still waiting to confirm it with my speakers.

Did anybody noticed it with their gear?

Lets hope this doesn't happen(technically speaking). Altough I think they are being really stubborn in releasing multichannel only, thereby by-passing a vast amount of musical (and sonic) treasures deserving to be unleashed by DSD's high resolution, I still appreciate that they only release in Quadro, what was recorded for Quadro. Multiple mikes does not mean multiple reproduction channels, especially not, if set out for a subsequent Stereo mix, no matter how many channels or mikes.

This request is for Pentaman. I was wondering if Pentatone is planning recordings of French repertoire, particularly orchestral music of Debussy? (La Mer, Images, Orchestral Nocturnes, etc?). I am also very interested in Poulenc works for orchestra, as well as Sibelius symphonies. Any word on these composers?

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

You could post your question in the general Pentatone thread, where pentaman regularly discusses such topics:
