What's in the background for the last few bars of the sonata; a car honking, a buzzer?

For me the noise is a clock sounding the hour, maybe 7 o'clock, its probably a church clock but could be a house clock.
I heard this when I first listened to the sonata on this disc and thought it was my local village church, but on repeat the noise was still there. Its quite faint but is noticeable in the fading notes of the sonata.
The sonata is well performed and has very good sound, its too early to say just how good this account is. The style contrasts stongly with my CD version by Bolet, which I have always thought very fine.

Definitely a church clock.

Seconded but must add that it is very, very faint and will only upset those listening (much) louder than concert volume.

I agree. I had to turn the volume up much more than usual to hear it clearly.

is this bell effect a serious impediment to enjoyment? it's the only thing stopping me investing. i don't like grunting, extraneous noises etc. and don't want to be disappointed.

Not for me. Like I said earlier, you need to turn it up so much louder than normal (and way beyond even concert hall volume of a tutti Mahler ffff!) that it shouldn't be a problem.

I doubt it - but the performance is OK at best in my view.

On SACD I prefer Yundi Li on DG ,or perhaps even better Paul Lewis on Harmonia Mundi RBCD, among recent performances.

jpc are today advertising another SACD by Groh from Avie.
See their new release page.

Brahms - Late Piano Pieces Op. 116 - 119.

Has not appeared on the Avie web site yet, so the catalogue number and whether it is an SACD and not RBCD cannot be confirmed.
Hopefully this disc will be without the church clock that faintly accompanied the end of the Lizst sonata!

I very much like Brahms: Piano Music Op. 116-119 - Elisabeth Leonskaja in these late Brahms works.
