No, on consideration I would have to agree. I am just so sick and tired of people (also including distributors and reviewers) revieweing/critisizing recordings based upon the equipment used rather than the sonic results. I don't care two hoots how a result has been achieved, as long as it sounds natural and is a true mirror of what actually happened.

Ok This is a double reply..As we are in almost total agreement on the above.I will respond to your comments re the recording process but the playback.Even the same so called equipment will sound different in different countries for technical reasons.People can look up the effect of mains noise being different worldwide not including voltage or phase differences. These add to variations in performance.
This is far more an influence on a system (dsd)that noise levels are paramount in its real top end performance and sonic behaviour.Sorry its getting technical. So anything you produce is going to sound different not because of anything you can control.
Any recording engineer who accuratly produces a sound of say a folk singing group whichever system he uses and they all have slight differences ,who then finds some reviewer stating that this recording doesnt have that same (insert current buzz word) as some other singers he has for comparison(highly coloured or sonically manipulated version)therefore the new version is inferior? It would and did piss me off. This of course applies to any recording.Consider yourself lucky that the average "Gramaphone" reviewer is tone deaf and over 120 years old and has no understanding what hirez is about..Different story on pop./.
I may add that you could also look at a worldwide trend in what people are wanting from a classical recording.Old saying you cannot please all the people etc etc..
If you read through the reviews and comments made by the sacd forum and are familiar with the discs you will easily observe these trends.I am not sure you would wish to record Prokofiev 5 with a sumptous sound ?
There are genuine reasons for these trends and I brought up and hinted at the subject once in a response to someones personal taste and faced a fair bit of abuse. Was even called a racist?..Even though my observations were proved correct.

Finally as a record dealer I must confess that Ive yet to sell any digital recorded lps at more than 10 euros but analogue discs from 1958-1970 are leaving today at 300 euros. This of course proves nothing but is significant and I may add that Malcom Arnolds British Dances is probably bettered by his EMI version. Also analogue.

I recieved the first batch today. RBCD unfortunately. But when I listened to John Ireland´s Epic March I just melted. In March the Finzi/Boult will be released, a gem indeed.

No Lloyd as yet. I will certainly play it as soon as it arrives, and I might even change my mind. Who knows. What I´m really looking forward to is the Bax 2. And the Howells/Butterworth from Boult...Thomas

Hi

I'm new to this Forum and wonder if there is any progress with DVD PCM issues?

I purchased the Malcolm Arnold Dances recording as an LP back in the 1970s and purchased the CD as soon as it was issued (with additional tracks) in 1990. It has always been my favourite orchestral recording and I was delighted that, to my ears, the CD sounded just as good as the LP.

So I am slightly disappointed with the new Boult Coates and Marches CD (SRCD246) which I received last week. The Boult/Marches LP was probably my second favourite orchestral recording of all time and it was great that it was at long last appearing on CD. However, to my ears, the sound of the orchestra is rather thin and many tracks seem bass light. Maybe this transfer is more true to the master tape but I would certainly like to hear an SACD or 24/96 PCM transfer to find out.

Even more disappointing, is that they left off three marches by Howells, Parry and Stanford when there was room on the disc to accommodate them and stay under 80 minutes. Alright, I know that those three tracks are (or are about to be) issued on three other CDs, but really!

The idea that 96/24 PCM DVD-V discs would sell better than SACD is completely unfounded IMHO. There are only a few dozen of such discs currently on the market (Classic Records DAD, Neil Young's recent reissues, etc).

My experience is that classical listeners are more audio-only than home theatre fans, thus they don't own a top level DVD player, or the DVD player isn't even connected to their (stereo) hifi equipment, because it is used for movies only.

It's no coincidence that DVD-A was mainly popular on the pop sector, and SACD in the classical sector.

Another option would be hi-rez PCM downloads, that customers can either burn to DVD-V or play directly on their PC (or media player devices like the Squeezebox). The Linn label is currently offering such downloads.

That sounds like an excellent idea.

This great label's founder has died.

With the death of Richard Itter, is it possible to see these released on SACD now?
There are some titles I would love to have, even if they are only stereo.

Yes - this is the only label who's stereo reissues on SACD (assuming proper mastering) would be compelling. I would probably buy 2 or 3 dozen.
