have just listened to this and agree strongly with polly nomial's review, to which i may add a few comments later.
for now, may i just say that this is a sensationally successful remastering of what i find a deeply satisfying performance.
if you love mahler, i urge you to try it.

Couldn't agree more. The sound is very good, and the performance is precious, particularly if you're a fan of any of the soloists. Hermann Prey makes this recording well worth the price alone.

i wonder are any more haitink/concertgebouw recordings quad and therefore pentatone possibles?

Mahler 5 is on our quad list with these forces, but I just see that Edvin already advised.

Hello Pentaman,
just wanted to add my praise to the list of people who rave about your recent Mahler 8th it is indeed an example of both very good engineering and playing of the very highest standard. And also ask if there is any chance of the whole series from You.
I know number 5 is coming.But what about the rest? Number 7 would be great, my old LP copies are getting a bit worn.

I compared this to the rbcd and the difference is minimal. As always with new remasters this one is louder and it also has the advantage of being quad. But when I increased the volume and played the rbcd through the DTS NEO 6 system the effect was similar.
If you think this is good engineering - thin organ, weak bassline etc - I suggest you listen to Nagano´s version which is so much better.
