I have it and I really like it. Suspect I shouldn't read the review!

Just took a look at the review and stopped when he said:

"I hoped to be able to say that with this Ruslan and Lyudmila the conductor had escaped from the death spiral of mediocre recordings that he has been making these days for PentaTone."

I can't quite imagine what recordings he is talking about, surely not the Tchaikovsky Orchestral Suite #3 or the Shostakovitch Symphonies?

The guy surely doesn't hear like I hear!

Read Dinko's review on this site. I agree with him that it is a 5 star recording.

Vedernikov has not recorded Tchaikovsky Suite no 3 or any symphonies by Shostakovich for Pentatone, not yet anyway. He has made a very bad sacd with ballet suites by Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Khatchaturian.

I've owned it for a long time, and it's as good as being in the Bolshoi. (Well, I still prefer the Bolshoi a bit more.) And I've actually been to Bolshoi many times. Now, with the wonders of SACD, I can pretend I'm in my hometown anytime.

Yeow! I confused Vedernikov with Jurowski! Apologies to all!
Bruce

But I still enoyed this Ruslan and Ludmilla (which I do own) and recommend anyone interested read Dinko's review which says all that is necessary for me.

The performance is not a patch on Geriev's on Philips. The sound is very good though. Vedernikov seems to have got his act together for the 'Highlights from Russina Operas' disc which is very good.
