does anybody know whether BOTH the works on this disc are in MC, or just the concerto?
it's an MC complete mandarin i'm particularly interested in.

It almost certainly is as it was first issued as a quadraphonic LP on:

No, both are 5.0
Don't forget Naxos have a complete Miraculous Mandarin on SACD, but I think the Boulez is better.

yes, i'd looked at that, but the reviews aren't encouraging. day in day out i would expect the NYPO to be a far finer orchestra.
i wonder how the sound compares overall between the two?

Both sound very good but quite different. Alsop is less incisive than Boulez and is recorded slightly more distantly in a quite reverberant acoustic which softens the sound a little too much for me.
Couplings also need considering.
Boulez C for O
Alsop Dance Suite + Hungarian Pictures

thank you, it does.
the only drawback is another concerto for orchestra as coupling - drawback, because i have 3 on MC already (kocsis, eschenbach, and jarvi).
but as i don't think any of those 3 ideal i really don't mind trying another, and a complete mandarin is most desirable.
actually if i'm honest i don't really see myself listening to kocsis and eschenbach again ever. i think i'll sell them.

IMHO the finest performance of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra is the Reiner/CSO. Unfortunately, this is only available in 2 ch SACD, and the sound is not nearly up to current standards. But ... I have never heard another performance that approaches it. The Solti/CSO and Boulez/CSO (is this a coincidence? - only joking) are both very good, but regretably are available only in so-so RBCD sound.
As stated in my review of the Jarvi, I think some of its tempos are completly off the mark, but the sound is very fine indeed. This is a perfect example of the Classics Today pro-Jarvi prejudice that you mention. It's not easy finding a reviewer whose tastes/prejudices match your own! As a member of the former Fritz Reiner Society, my opinions on Reiner's recordings should probably be viewed with a little suspicion.

Isn´t the Reiner slightly cut in the finale? Or does my memory play tricks with me..
