Looks like the Stones has a lot of SACD titles out, I'm looking to buy a 'best of..' type release and I'd need a recommendation. Which one(s) are the best as far as song selection and quality?
Thanks..

i'd suggest the two Hot Rocks compilations, each 2 discs.

As individual albums go, I would vote for Let it Bleed as #1 followed closely by Beggar's Banquet. These "albums" are in a league of their own.

Exile on Main Street and Tattoo You are the next tier of Stones' goodies(not on SACD) followed by Get your Ya Yas Out (which is on SACD) arguably one of the best live rock albums of all time; the duelling guitar work on Sympathy for the Devil between Mick Taylor and Keith Richards is worth the price of the disk alone.

Their early works would be best surveyed on the Hot Rocks compilations. My favorite of their early albums is December's Children. I am intrigued by how Their Satanic Majesties Request will sound on SACD but not enough to buy it yet.

Added thoughts: I forgot about Sticky Fingers somehow! That one ranks slightly ahead or behind Exile depending on my mood at the time. I own most of the Stones albums in one format or another and IMHO those from Some Girls and Undercover through Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon all have good songs and some great individual tunes, but the 5 mentioned above really seem to hold up as complete works from start to finish.

(I corrected the Mick Tayor gaff! Must have been thinking about poor Brian.)

Merlin is right on the money with Let It Bleed and BB as the top of the Stone's re-issue heap. Although personally I might reverse the two. No Expectations alone makes it worth owning the SACD of BB. As for Exile, I can only hope that Rolling Stones Records gets on board and comes out with an SACD of that one and soon!

IMO Get Yer Ya-Yas Out ranks second in "sanctioned" rock live albums only to Fillmore East, although I have found the SACD of this title to be not significantly better than my standard CD version (hope the same is not true for Fillmore East whenever it arrives, I am positively drooling at the possibilities presented by that stunning version of Elizabeth Reed on SACD! Free Bird my a**!!! In Memory... is live guitfiddle magic at it's best!). Oh and for what it is worth, the guitarist's name is Mick Taylor.

I have to agree with you. I think Let It Bleed is an excellent disc to use when anyone wants to compare a redbook CD with its remastered SACD counterpart. Two different worlds! Best Regards, David Elias

Have always thought 12 X 5 had the true "sound" of the Stones in their early years. This is a great CD, I place it ahead of anything except LIB, EXILE,BB and SF.

The Stones were a blues cover band - turns out they were pretty good. :-)

Yes, I remember figuring out the cleverness of the title...not that earth shattering but different than the rest of the popular drek that was coming out at the time.

We had a Stones cover band at our high school called the Offspring. They did great versions of Stones and other blues material. Their lead singer had the Jaggar swagger down to a tee. My band, an sextet called the Pawns, dressed in matching cranberry sweaters and specialized in songs rich in vocal harmony like the Beach Boys and the Beatles but only one or two Stones tunes. Fun times.
