Could someone please confirm whether this disc is in multi-channel or not?
This web site says Stereo/Multichannel but both Amazon uk and MDT show a picture of the jewel case which shows one of those sticky labels saying "Hybrid Stereo": not "Hybrid Multichannel"!
6 people have recommended this disc so far but no review - any comments on it would be welcomed.

It's definitely stereo or bi-channel as Praga has it. There's a glowing review on www.audaud.com.
Incidentally, ClassicsToday gives it 10/10, and most other reviews have been glowing, too. However, a reviewer on audio asylum says it's the worst chamber music recording he/she's ever heard. I'm going to take the plunge and buy it.
I've got the Schubert String Quintet SACD (also bi-channel), and thinks it's superb both as a performance and a recording, though not perhaps quite the equal of the Hollywood (Testament SBT 1031, essential listening coupled with Schoenberg's Verk Nacht), Vegh and co (1960s stereo with lots of grunting and singing), or the 1952 recording with Stern, Schneider, Casals, Katims and Tortelier (goodish mono). However, the more I listen to it, the more I like it; it's one of those cases where recordings one has listened to for years and years become like old friends, and the new kid takes time to settle in.

Thanks Peter, I did search on ClassicsToday but did an SACD search and so did not find the review, which is for the CD version. The www.audaud.com review was helpful confirmation of it being a stereo only SACD.
Still seems worth buying though, even without multi-channel.

Many thanks, Seth. I suspected some of the tempi would be quick as most recordings of the pair don't fit on a single disc.

I'm pretty sure that a repeat was omitted in the first movement of the E flat, and maybe the second movement of the B flat, but I would have to consult the scores to say for sure.

dear Andrew and Peter, a quick note to say that i think seth is being harsh. Admittedly, if the Beaux Arts are a five then the Guarnari performance is only a four, but i think it's a good solid four. The recording doesnt have the soundstage depth of a good m/c but is still pretty good, again a four, all, of course IMHO. B

Like I said, it's average. 3/5 means it's half way in between the worse and best.
re: sound
The sound might be pretty good, but it's nothing special. Again, average. If the recording doesn't create the illusion that the performers are in my listening room, then in my book the best it can be rated is a 3.5. Everything is relative and the Wispelwey/Lazic Beethoven Cello sonatas have set the bar very high just for stereo.

Thank you seth, for putting this into review form. I quite agree, but am too lazy to review something that is neither wonderful nor awful.
But don't write the Guarneri's off entirely yet: I have been enjoying the Praga / Guarneri Czech Piano Trios all week. Where the Schubert has a 'muffled' quality to the sound, the Czechs are nicely 'present', and its nice fresh repertoire for the sacd library (I'm a fan of small-scale Smetana).
The REAL WINNER in this week's listening is, however, the Altenberg playing the two Mendelssohn Klaviertrios. I started a review of that disc, but got distracted by beautiful May weather....

This CD/SACD has both : stereo AND multi-channel. I have the CD and I know very well the producer and the Domovina studio in Prag. One of the best version of the Schuberts's piano trio. The technical (and musical) quality of the CD are wonderful.
