Bought my 60GB PS3 fat boy on the day of the PS3's release and whilst I never play games on it ( I bought it purely as a Blu ray player initially but have since bought more up to date standalone players since ) it still works as well as the day I bought it. I often play CD's and SACDs via HDMI upscaled to 176.4Khz/24Bit through my system. Given its the most capable version of the PS3 made ( except its inability to bitstream HD surround without PCM conversion ) for me it stands as an amazing peice of hardware which has kept itself up to date. I can think of no other piece of A/V kit that can make that claim and from a SACD point of view it aint half bad either!

Shame about the fan noise though...

Mine's been good value as a BD/DVD player and for Tiger Woods golf etc. But now my tendonitis is too bad I can't use it for the latter, and my Cambridge Audio universal has replaced it for the former.

Still have it hanging around though.

It is the best sacd player I owned...as long as you are feeding it into a high bit rate receiver, I.e. onkyo 805 or later, I.e. late 2007 onwards. This is thanks to the superbit settings. Bitmap type 3.

One of my local second hand shops has one of the ones listed (and has the SACD logo) for £140. Nearly as much as a new slim one!

Anybody buying a second hand fat PS3 on the premise that it will play SACD just because it has the SACD logo on the outside needs to be careful. Many were repaired and the replacement drive used isnt SACD compatible so you could be in for a shock expecting a refurbished unit to play back your SACDs.

Make sure the warranty seal is intact.

Yes, a unit with the original BD/DVD/SACD/CD drive combined with the latest (low-power) versions of CPU and GPU (Cell BE and RSX) would be ideal but that remains a dream.

I also think a hardware hack – pardon, mod – at that level is beyond anyone's ability (except Sony's).

Tom, both rammiepie and I have bought this player which is quite possibly the best SACD player on this planet and at a price that shames many.

Thanks John. I was afraid the SACD player wasn't as newly released as the Network player, but wanted to make sure its presence was known. Jared talked with Ken Ishiwata from Marantz at a show today, and came away very impressed.
